Tithonia rotundifolia (Latin Tithonia rotundifolia) - a flowering herb; a representative of the genus Titonia of the family Compositae, or Astrovye. Refers to annual crops. Mexico is considered the homeland. The plant got its name in honor of Titon, the son of Tsar Troyan. Titonia is often referred to as a Mexican sunflower. This aspect is directly related to the structure of the basket. Its petal flowers are similar to sunflower ones, only they have a rich orange color. Disc flowers are also similar.
Characteristics of culture
Tithonia round-leaved is represented by annual herbaceous plants up to 1.5 meters high, with reddish, slightly pubescent stems over the entire surface. The stems, in turn, are crowned with large, green, cordate, trilobate, crenate foliage endowed with petioles. The outer part of the leaves is smooth, bare, the lower one is pubescent, silky to the touch.
Baskets are medium in size, do not exceed 8-10 cm in diameter. Ligulate (marginal) flowers are orange or scarlet-red in color, tubular (disc) flowers are bright, yellow. The pedicels of the culture under consideration are hollow, narrowed at the bottom and, conversely, widening at the top. The flowering of titonia round-leaved begins in the third decade of July and continues until the onset of frost. True, at temperatures below 10C, the marginal flowers change color to brown-red.
Popular varieties
Currently, round-leaved titonia is actively used in breeding. To date, growers distinguish the "Torch" variety. In the process of growth, this variety forms lush bushes up to 100-150 cm in height, above which large baskets flaunt with rich red marginal flowers and yellow disc flowers.
Also among summer residents the variety "Red lantern" is of interest. It is famous for its lush bushes up to 150 cm high, crowned with large flowers with orange-red marginal flowers. The variety boasts abundant and long-lasting flowering. It is also ideal for summer bouquets. It looks great in tandem with representatives of the genus Compositae, which have purple and yellow colors.
It is impossible not to mention the variety "Goldfinger". He, unlike previous varieties, cannot boast of great height. Usually the bushes do not exceed 60-70 cm in height, but rather large baskets are characteristic of it. Provided proper care, the baskets reach 7-8 cm in diameter. The color of the marginal flowers is red, the disc flowers are yellow. The variety "Goldfinger" is perfect for arranging bouquets, which, by the way, last for a very long time.
Growing features
In general, round-leaved titonia cannot be called a whimsical culture. But in order to get lush bushes, abundantly strewn with "fiery" baskets, it is important to plant the crop in well-lit areas with nutritious and moderately moist soil. It is important to provide the culture with protection from cold northerly winds; you should not plant it in shady areas, as well as in lowlands with an accumulation of cold air.
The soil, as already mentioned, must be nutritious, it is advisable to add a little washed river sand to it. For planting, it is important to fertilize the ridges with rotted humus or compost. It is also worth mentioning that the soil must be loose. Too heavy and clayey soils, especially coupled with close-lying groundwater, will not allow the plant to develop normally. They will develop slowly, often get sick and are unlikely to please with flowering.
It is preferable to grow tithonia round-leaved in a seedling way. Sowing seeds is recommended to be carried out in the third decade of March - the first decade of April in the soil composed of garden soil, peat, coarse sand with the addition of a small amount of compost. The seeds are not deepened, but only slightly pressed into the ground with a toothpick. After sowing, watered, covered with foil and placed in a warm place.
Thinning or diving in separate containers is carried out when 2-3 true leaves appear at the seedlings. Planting seedlings in the ground is carried out in the third decade of May - the first decade of June, at a time when the threat of frost has passed. The optimal distance between plants is 60-70 cm. It is not recommended to plant titonia too often, as it becomes very lush during the growth process.
