Yellow Lotus (lat. Nelumbo lutea), or American Lotus - one of two species still present on our planet of plants belonging to the genus Lotus (lat. Nelumbo), which is the only genus of the family of the same name Lotus (lat. Nelumbonaceae). It differs from its relative, the nut lotus, in that it lives in North America, and not in the water bodies of Southeast Asia. The rest, perhaps, is very similar to him. The yellow color symbolizes creativity, knowledge and a person's confidence in their abilities. The American Indians ate the roots and seeds of the plant.

What's in your name

If the Latin name of the genus "Nelumbo" is lost in the ancient Sinhalese language, then with the specific epithet, the situation is much simpler, since the word is translated from Latin into Russian by the word "yellow", based on the color of the flower petals.

The popular name "American Lotus" indicates the place of growth of this species.

The yellow lotus was first described by a German botanist named Carl Ludwig Willdenow (1765-22-08 - 1812-10-07). The herbarium, created by the hands of this botanist, which contains more than twenty thousand plant species, has survived to this day and is located in the Berlin Botanical Garden.

Description

Similarly to the nut-bearing Lotus, the creeping rhizome and roots of the described species are fixed in the soil of the bottom of reservoirs (swamps, shallow lakes, areas flooded by floods), releasing strong stems that carry leaves and flowers to the world, towering above the water surface or floating on the water surface. The starchy tuberous root sprouts and lotus seeds were used for food by the American Aborigines.

The petioles of leaves can be up to two meters long, ending in a round leaf plate, which differs from the leaves of the plant with the name Water Lily, which is sometimes confused with Lotus, for its integrity, while the leaves of Water Lilies have a distinctive sign - a cut of the leaf plate extending from the edge of the leaf to its center or almost reaching the center point of the sheet plate.

Lotus leaves are large, their diameter varies from thirty-three to forty-three centimeters. Mature plants range in height from eighty to one hundred and fifty centimeters.

The end of spring gives nature the bloom of the Lotus, which can continue during the summer. The numerous petals of large and showy flowers range in color from pure white to pale yellow. The number of petals in one flower varies from twenty-two to twenty-five pieces. The diameter of the flower is measured from eighteen to twenty-eight centimeters. In the center of the flower, the stamens and pistil of a funny shape turn brightly yellow.

The growing season ends with a box with hardy seeds. Yellow Lotus seeds retain their germination for two centuries.

Symbol of creativity, knowledge and confidence

Thanks to its yellow hue, the American Lotus is a symbol of creativity, knowledge and self-confidence. If it were possible to transfer the lessons to where the yellow wild flowers of the Lotus grow, then the plant would help students to formulate their thoughts more clearly, not to be afraid to make their own decisions, as well as to focus on the subject of study and easily memorize new information.

Usage

Large starchy tuberous roots and lotus seeds were used for food by the American natives. The seeds are known as alligator corn.

The shade of large Lotus leaves is a shelter for insects and small wild animals from the scorching sun rays.

The attractive seed pods of Yellow Lotus are ideal for dry flower bouquets.

From the two species of Lotus that exist in the wild, many beautiful hybrids have been bred, which are popular when decorating artificial small reservoirs.
