Crinum thai (lat. Crinum thaianum) Is an aquatic plant belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family.

Description

Krinum Thai is an aquatic plant, the bulbs of which often reach a thickness of seven centimeters. And the length of its juicy green leaves can reach two meters. All leaves are very soft to the touch, rather strongly twisted, differ in ribbon-like shape and gather in fancy rosettes. In order to break them, you have to make some effort. As for the venation of the leaves of this aquatic beauty, it is characterized by the complete absence of clearly distinguishable central veins.

The slender flower arrows of the Thai krinum sometimes reach eighty centimeters in length. And its inflorescences are formed by fragrant flowers, the number of which can vary from five to ten pieces. Each flower is connected to the perianth by means of straight and rather long tubes, and they have six stamens with leaves.

This aquatic inhabitant is capable of blooming only in favorable conditions (at a low water level, sufficiently high temperature and good sunlight). By the way, even with the best parameters, not a single aquarist has yet managed to obtain seeds for breeding the beautiful Thai krinum in aquarium conditions.

Usage

Krinum Thai is widely used to decorate water bodies. Due to its intensive growth, in the shortest possible time, it forms a chic blanket of funny floating leaves on the water surface. And in order for this aquatic pet to look as effective as possible in aquariums, most often it is planted near the side or rear walls.

Growing and caring

To grow this plant, either aquariums of very impressive volumes are needed, or tropical reservoirs, the water temperature in which does not fall below twenty-two degrees. If the thermometer drops below, the growth of the Thai krinum will slow down significantly, and it will slowly begin to shed old leaves.

It is important to try to take the soil for planting krinum Thai as much as possible enriched with all kinds of nutrients, and the height of the soil should be at least eight centimeters. The best substrate will be sand or pebbles. As for the size of the particles of the selected soil, it can be absolutely anything. It is also important to take into account the fact that sufficiently powerful roots of this aquatic plant vitally need sufficient space for subsequent distribution in the ground. If you plan to subsequently move it to a new soil, then it will not hurt to place a tiny piece of clay under its roots. You can combine clay with a small amount of peat.

Equally well, this aquatic beauty will develop in both soft and hard water, but it is important to try to maintain the temperature range constantly within the range from twenty-two to twenty-seven degrees. True, if the hardness of the water is less than four degrees, the stable growth of the Thai krinum may stop, so it is still better to prefer water of medium hardness or soft water. And the acidity level may well be in the range of pH 6, 8 - 8, 0. In addition, up to a quarter of the total volume of water in aquariums should be replaced with fresh water about once a week.

The Krinum Thai needs moderate lighting, and the daylight hours of this beautiful plant should be at least twelve hours. As for its reproduction, it can be both generative and vegetative. Most often, the Thai krinum is propagated by miniature daughter bulbs separated from the mother plants. And the first babies, as a rule, appear only after three to five years after planting.
