Krinum will appeal to those who are connoisseurs of large flowers with large buds. The plant is more suitable for owners of dwellings with spacious rooms, because some representatives of this amaryllis reach the most real gigantic sizes
Exotic Krinum
This evergreen exotic came to us from the tropical latitudes of Asia; the plant also lives in Australia and South Africa. The plant has a very unusual shape and size. The long, wide leaves of the krinum form a false stem, rising in height from a thickening in the form of a bulb, like a fountain, diverging and hanging in different directions, like a bundle of hair. Thanks to this decorative feature, the krinum got its name, which means "hair" in Latin.
The peduncle of the krinum is rather thick. A flower arrow extends from the side of the bulb and rises above the drooping leaves. The flowering period is in August-September. At this time, an umbrella of large buds appears on the peduncle. The petals of krinum flowers are white, pale and bright pink, variegated, with expressive colored stripes. The shape of the flower is bell-shaped, the stamens are thin and very long.
In indoor floriculture, various types of krinum are grown. One of the popular varieties is the favorite krinum. White fragrant petals grow from a pink tube with bright purple stamens. Krinum Mura has both indoor and garden forms. Its buds are white and pink. Also known is the indoor and garden form of the Poveli krinuma variety. Its flowers have a wider range of petal colors and, in addition to white and pink, bloom red buds.
Content of krinum
In the summer months, you can change the location of the indoor flower: it is transferred to the balcony or placed in the front garden. It is important that these are places protected from direct sunlight, and also that the pot does not stand in a draft or wind around it. When the crinum is kept outdoors, it is best to bring it indoors during heavy rains.
During the growing season, regular abundant watering with warm water is carried out. Mineral dressing is combined with soil moistening. As a rule, the flowering period falls at the end of summer and autumn. After the krinum has faded, the plant should begin a dormant period. From this moment on, the number and volume of irrigation are reduced. In the winter months, it is rarely watered, but it is not transferred to an absolutely dry content, since the bulb needs moisture. Those indoor plants that have not been provided with a period of deep dormancy will refuse to form buds next year.
Top dressing is carried out during the growing season. Flowers especially need fertilization when new leaves appear. Universal liquid fertilizer for flower plants is suitable for krinum. Top dressing should be stopped after the flowers wither.
Transplantation and reproduction of krinum
Krinum must be transplanted into a fresh nutrient substrate every 2-3 years. This work is carried out before the resumption of the growth process. At the same time, during transplantation, children are separated from the bulb - they serve as planting material for plant propagation. The flowering of young plants can be expected in the third or fourth year of life.
The nutrient substrate is prepared from the following mixture:
• sod land - 3 parts;
• deciduous land - 3 parts;
• sand - 1 part.
At the bottom, a drainage layer of expanded clay is arranged. The bulb is removed from the ground and the roots are carefully cleaned from the old soil. The pot needs a deep one to accommodate a powerful root system. But the whole bulb cannot be buried in the soil; it should rise by about 2/3 of its height above the ground.
