Initial letter medicinal (lat.betonica officinalis) - a representative of the genus Drop, belonging to the Lamb family. In nature, it is found in the European part of Russia, as well as in Siberia and the Urals. Typical habitats are damp meadows, mountainous areas, forest edges. It is used not only for medicinal purposes, but also as an ornamental flowering plant.

Characteristics of culture

The medicinal letter is represented by perennial plants with fibrous, short, steep rhizomes. They are characterized by erect, simple stems up to 100 cm high, pubescent with hard hairs. The foliage is opposite, petiolate, elongated, ovoid, obtuse at the tips, crenate, cordate at the base, like the stem, covered with hard hairs.

The flowers in the considered type of drop caps are of an irregular shape, large, create in the process of development multi-flowered half-whorls, which, in turn, are collected in spike-shaped inflorescences. Bracts in plants are ovoid, pointed. The calyx has a bell-shaped shape, does not fall off, endowed with five equal denticles, covered with short hairs. The corolla is purple in color, there are also white ones, but very rarely.

The fruits are represented by dry, smooth, convex single-seeded nuts, which sit in the calyx of the flower. As mentioned above, the cup of the medicinal letter does not fall off. The flowering culture is observed in summer, usually begins in the first decade of June and ends with the arrival of frost. Fruiting begins in the second or third decade of July and lasts until October.

Collection of medicinal raw materials

The collection of medicinal raw materials begins in June, when the letter blooms. The collection is not forbidden to carry out throughout the summer, while the plant is blooming. It is advisable to collect in sunny and dry weather. The stems are cut almost to the root with a knife. It is best to dry the raw materials under a canopy, spreading it in a thin layer on a cloth. It is recommended to store raw materials in fabric bags for no more than 2 years.

Application in traditional medicine

The medicinal letter is endowed with a lot of useful properties due to its unique composition. It boasts anti-inflammatory, sedative, and diuretic properties. The herb infusion is recommended to be taken with high blood pressure, for pain relief, as an expectorant. It should be noted that the drop cap helps to increase immunity. An infusion of it is advised to take with ARVI, flu. Also, the healing "drug" helps to ease the course of tonsillitis (sore throat) and bronchitis.

An infusion and a decoction from a drop cap is useful for the digestive tract, bladder, and cardiovascular system. The herb is indispensable for purely female gynecological problems. With purulent wounds, the plant will also become a real salvation, since it will accelerate the healing process. In the latter case, lotions are used.
