Brukentalia subulate (Latin Bruckenthalia spiculifolia) - ornamental shrub; a representative of the Brukentalia genus of the Heather family. Another name is spikelet brukentalia. The native land of the species is Asia Minor and Europe. In nature, plants are found in coniferous forests, meadows and mountains. Highly decorative view, suitable for ornamental gardening.

Characteristics of culture

Brukentalia subulate - an evergreen shrub up to 20 cm high with a compact crown. Outwardly, the species of brukentalia under consideration is similar to the popular erika plant. With proper care and favorable conditions, the shrubs grow up to half a meter wide, forming a pillow-like shape. Branches are thin, almost unbranched, numerous, stretching upward, brown in color, completely covered with needle-like yellow-green leaves, creating an unusual fluffiness effect that attracts attention. By the way, this type of brukentalia got its name precisely due to the shape of its foliage. It should be noted that the foliage of the subulate-leaved brukentalia is very different in color from the foliage of other representatives of the Heather family, it is rich and bright.

The flowers are small, numerous, fragrant, light pink, sometimes with a lilac tint, collected in spike-shaped inflorescences up to 3 cm long, which are crowned with shoots rushing upwards. Spike-shaped inflorescences rise in even rows above dense greenery, all together makes the bush memorable. The flowers have a pleasant aroma that flutters around, even after drying, the flowers do not lose it. Brokentalia schilate-leaved is suitable for cultivation in Central Russia, however, in this climate, it blooms only in the second half of August. The species is sun- and thermophilic, but develops calmly in weakly shaded areas. It is not forbidden to plant plants near low flowering shrubs.

Currently, there is one variety of styloid-leaved Brukentalia Balkan Rose (Balkan Rose) on the garden market. The variety is represented by winter-hardy shrubs with lush inflorescences, consisting of small fragrant fuchsia flowers. Brukentalia subulate, like Heathers, is demanding on soil conditions; for normal development, it requires acidic soil. The species has a negative attitude towards prolonged drought, needs frequent watering, but it is neutral towards wind and pollution, therefore it is suitable for landscaping city parks. Despite the winter-hardy properties, in regions with cold winters, shrubs must be covered with spunbod or spruce branches, especially young specimens.

Features of cultivation

As already mentioned, it is advisable to plant subulate-leaved brukentalia in sunny or slightly shaded areas with loose, light, acidic soils. It is preferable to make a soil mixture of coniferous soil, peat and sand in a ratio of 2: 3: 1. Coniferous soil can be collected from the nearest pine or spruce forest. It is recommended to use red (brown) peat, it is often called high peat. In areas with clay and heavy soils, drainage from broken bricks or rubble is required. The soil at the foot must be mulched with organic material, for example, sawdust, pine bark or wood chips.

Caring for the styloid brukentalia is unremarkable. Watering during a long absence of rain, feeding and shelter for the winter are the main procedures for caring for a plant. Planting of seedlings of this type of brukentalia is carried out in the spring. The depth of the planting pit should be about 40 cm. The earth taken out of the pit is replaced with an acidic mixture, its components and proportions are described a little higher. Brukentalia is styloid-leaved by seeds, root layers, cuttings and dividing the bush. The seeds are distinguished by good germination, as a rule, more than 50% of the seeds germinate. Cutting is also effective, with proper care and the creation of favorable conditions, about 50-60% of the cuttings are rooted, these are the results when the treatment of cuttings with growth stimulants is excluded.

Application

Brukentalia awl-shaped is a highly decorative culture, it is great for creating groups, original borders, alpine slides, mixers and other types of flower beds. The shrubs will harmoniously look in heather gardens among heathers and erica. Also, brukentalia subulate-leaved is perfectly combined with other decorative undersized shrubs and soil-growing plants.
