Brugmancia blood-red (lat. Brugmancia sanguine) - a representative of the Brugmansia clan, belonging to the Solanovy family. One of the tallest species. In nature, specimens over 10 m in height can be captured, but in very limited numbers, since the plant is on the verge of extinction due to human factors.
Characteristics of culture
Brugmansia blood-red is represented by tall plants up to 14 m high, crowned with large, whole-edged, oval, green, smooth foliage, endowed with pronounced veins and a wavy edge. A distinctive feature is the layered arrangement of foliage. As a rule, the first tier is occupied by slightly elongated foliage without waves along the edge, the second is a smaller oval one with a wavy edge.
The flowers are tubular, bell-shaped, simple, red, red-orange or brick-red, huge in size, sometimes gigantic - up to 25 cm in diameter. Unlike other representatives of the genus, they have no smell. In the conditions of Russia (especially in the Urals and Siberia), blood-red brugmansia is grown as a tub culture. That is, in the summer it is kept in the garden (outdoors), in the winter - in a greenhouse or apartment, house, if the height allows.
Brugmansia blood-red belongs to frost-resistant species, his other "companions" in kind cannot boast of such a feature. The plant tolerates short-term frosts calmly, but it is better not to allow prolonged hypothermia. In general, it is better to create the most comfortable conditions for the culture (lighting, temperature, humidity), otherwise you cannot avoid dropping foliage, lack of flowering.
Growing features
Brugmansia blood red is very photophilous. It is best to plant it in well-lit areas, possibly with diffused light. It is important to note that shady areas negatively affect the growth and development of the plant, including flowering. The presence of fresh air is important, you should not torment the culture in a stuffy room in the summer, it is better to give it a place in the garden, but protected from the north wind and draft.
The optimum growing temperature is 23-25C. This applies to spring and summer. In winter, blood-red brugmansia enters a resting phase, it can be kept indoors at a temperature of at least 12C. If a warm wintering is planned, it is important to provide the plant with abundant watering as the soil dries up and additional lighting, otherwise the foliage will begin to fade quickly.
Subtleties of transplant
It is worth noting that blood-red brugmansia calmly tolerates a transplant, so you can safely transplant it several times a year. Moreover, this manipulation will have to be carried out very often (especially at an early age), because the plant, with favorable care and climate, grows rapidly and forms a powerful root system that quickly fills the garden pot.
When transplanting, powerful roots are slightly shortened and treated with coal, after which they are planted in a new container filled with fresh soil previously fertilized with mineral fertilizers, mixed with peat and humus. In such soil, the plant quickly takes root and continues to grow actively. In general, top dressing is extremely important for brugmansy. They should be made at least 1 time per week. It is advisable to alternate the complex of minerals with rotted organic matter. In winter, feeding is not required.
