Dicentra magnificent (lat. Dicentra spectabilis) - a representative of the genus Dicenter of the Poppy family. The people call the plant a broken heart. In nature, it is found on the territory of Russia (mainly in the Primorsky Territory), in the eastern regions of the People's Republic of China and, finally, North Korea. Typical habitats are forest zones, open fields to the sun and mountain slopes.
Important feature
Despite its incredible beauty and active use in ornamental gardening, the magnificent bleeding center is not entirely safe. The fact is that its roots contain the lion's dose of poisonous alkaloids, which are often the cause of death of domestic animals that feed on herbs. If a gardener has animals on his farm and cultivates an excellent dicenter on the plot, immediately after the rain he is simply obliged to huddle the plant, because heavy rainfall contributes to the exposure of dangerous roots.
Characteristics of culture
The splendid dicenter is represented by perennial herbaceous plants, which do not exceed 1 m in height. They are characterized by erect, thickened, very juicy, fleshy stems, abundantly covered with foliage. Leaves, in turn, are complex, petiolate, triple-dissected into small lobes, which have a smooth surface and a jagged edge. The foliage color is green, often the underside is endowed with a gray or bluish bloom.
The flowers are heart-shaped, symmetrical, collected in large clusters up to 15 pieces, formed in the leaf axils. The petals are pink or white-pink, whole. The inner petals can be of various colors, usually reddish, yellow or snow-white. The fruits are represented by oblong capsules, which do not exceed 3.5 cm in length. They bear large, black, smooth, spherical seeds. One box, as a rule, contains no more than 8 seeds, which, by the way, remain viable for 2-3 years.
The flowering of the gorgeous bleeding center largely depends on the quality of care and, of course, climatic conditions. However, in most cases, plants bloom in the second or third decade of May - early June. Flowering is short, lasts no more than a month. Interestingly, the aboveground part dies off quickly after flowering stops, therefore it is recommended to plant it in areas where, after pink buds, no less bright and attractive inflorescences wake up.
Today, the excellent dicenter is used in breeding work. Many interesting varieties have already been obtained, which differ in the size and shade of the inflorescences, as well as the duration of flowering and winter hardiness. The varieties that belong to the white-flowered form are especially popular. Also, recognition was won by varieties with golden foliage and pink inflorescences. Such a union looks very harmonious against the background of green ornamental plants.
Care features
Even a novice gardener can take care of the magnificent dicenter. It is important to provide the culture with timely watering, weeding and loosening. Particular attention should be paid to watering plants during a prolonged drought. It is necessary not only to increase the number of irrigations, but also the volume of water used. Top dressing is also welcome. The first is carried out in early spring, scattering fertilizers over the snow, the second - during budding.
The medical center is magnificent, unfortunately, it cannot boast of high winter-hardy properties, therefore, for the winter (especially in the Urals and Siberia), plants should be covered with fallen leaves or dry peat, the layer of which is at least 7-8 cm. Removing the faded inflorescences will play into the gardener's hand . This manipulation will extend the flowering period, albeit for a short time.
