The needle hermit grows in water bodies of Asia, America and Australia, as well as in warm European water bodies. It grows equally well in deep and shallow waters, as well as along the edges of swamps, ponds and rivers. Moreover, it can grow on absolutely any soils - on clay, pebble, sandy or silty. In addition to all of the above, this plant is excellently adaptable to aquarium conditions. Thanks to this ability, the needle squirrel has gained popularity among aquarists
Getting to know the plant
Sitnyag acicular is a marsh beauty that can endure long flooding extremely easily. However, its growth rate can be severely slowed when kept in aquariums for a long time. The height of this aquatic inhabitant reaches an average of fifteen centimeters, and in general it is a bundle of needle-like thin leaves of bright green shades. Sitnyag needle usually grows with just such colorful bunches.
It is noteworthy that the needle squirrel is sometimes confused with the tiny sitnyag, especially if it grew in the shade and, therefore, could not reach its standard length.
Sometimes this beautiful aquatic man is used as an anchor holding a beautiful Riccia at the bottom (for this, a lump of Riccia is first pressed with a pebble, and then a small bush of a shitnyaga is planted there with the help of tweezers).
How to grow
A low water level is perfect for comfortable growing of the needle-headed hermit in aquariums. And they place it either in the foreground or on the side shelves.
This aquatic beauty will feel great in cold or moderately warm aquariums with water temperatures ranging from twelve to sixteen degrees in winter and about twenty degrees in warm seasons. The aqueous medium is most preferable mild, characterized by a weakly acidic or neutral active reaction.
It is best to take a mixture of sand and clay as a substrate for the successful maintenance of needle shrew. As for the thickness of the soil, it is, as a rule, equal to three centimeters, no more, since the root system of this aquatic inhabitant is rather weak. He usually does not need additional feeding, since this handsome marsh man is easily content with the natural silting of the soil - as a rule, this is quite enough for his full development and normal growth.
The key to the health and longevity of the needle-headed hermit that is grown in aquariums is cleanliness - if this handsome man becomes covered with turbidity or becomes overgrown with algae, the consequences for him can be most disastrous. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically clean the soil in the aquariums and carry out a water change.
The illumination of the needle-like cat must be bright and intense. This aquatic inhabitant also has an extremely positive attitude to sunlight. However, in this case, the needle-like shad should be provided with shading, because with direct radiation, unwanted algae begin to form on the surfaces of its leaves. As for artificial lighting, fluorescent lamps will be quite enough for its organization. And the power of such lamps in each case is selected individually. Also, for the safe keeping of the needle sitnyaga, it is recommended, if possible, to organize side illumination. As for daylight hours, its duration should be pretty decent - about fourteen hours a day.
The magnificent needle-leaved hermit reproduces vegetatively - for this purpose, ground outlets are separated from adult specimens. This is done very easily, and usually there are no difficulties with the reproduction of a wonderful aquatic beauty.
The needle squirrel can also be kept in paludarium conditions (in a semi-submerged form). The optimal temperature for growing it in paludariums will be about twenty-two to twenty-four degrees. And a suitable soil for its maintenance will be a mixture of clay and sand, to which garden soil is added. The light, as in the case of growing in aquariums, should be as bright as possible, and closer to winter, the needle squirrels are moved to cool rooms with moderate lighting.
