Colchicum magnificent (lat. Colchicum speciosum) - a perennial herb of the Colchicum genus of the Columbus family. Another name is magnificent colchicum. In nature, it occurs in forests, where chestnuts, beeches and hornbeams appear, as well as in meadows and in the highlands. It grows mainly in the Caucasus and Asia Minor. Characteristics of culture
The magnificent crocus is represented by perennial bulbous plants, which do not exceed 60 cm in height. Also, dwarf varieties are found in culture - up to 20 cm. The bulb in the species under consideration is quite large, has an oblong shape, reaches 4 cm in diameter, its surface is covered with leathery shells, which, in turn, are brownish in color. The membranous membranes of the bulb form a smooth transition into the tube belonging to the lower part of the plant stem.
The stem is rather wide, bears oblong foliage, obtuse at the tips. The lower foliage is slightly different from the one on the top of the stem. It has an ovoid shape and is equipped with an elongated sheath, which forms a so-called false stem during growth. The flowers of the columbus are magnificent, large, can have a purple, pink or purple color, are formed in the amount of 3-4 pieces. The throat of the flowers is glandular.
The fruits of the species under consideration are represented by elliptical three-celled capsules. They contain small, rounded, brown seeds. The flowering of the culture is observed in late summer - early autumn, which largely depends on proper care and climatic conditions. Currently, as already mentioned, it is used in breeding, is the ancestor of many varieties and forms, which not only ennoble the garden, but also plant as a medicinal raw material.
Medical use
For medical purposes, they mainly use the splendid columbus bulb. Its healing properties have been known since ancient times. Ointments and tinctures are used as a pain reliever and in the treatment of arthritis, gout and rheumatism. It is important to remember that all parts of the plant are poisonous, and before using any form of a medicinal product, it is imperative to consult a doctor, because an exceeded dosage threatens not only nausea and vomiting, but also death.
Common varieties
Among the varieties that are popular among gardeners and florists, there is a variety called Huxley. It has large purple flowers that change color over time to a rich purple. The variety is also characterized by very large foliage. It is impossible not to mention the Waterlily variety. It is famous for its purple double flowers. Flowers of the Premier variety have a similar color, however, this variety is classified as late flowering. In addition to varieties, the magnificent crocus has several forms, the flowers of which can be milky white, dark red and pale lilac.
Care features
Colchicum magnificent is not a whimsical plant, caring for it is reduced by standard procedures - watering, weeding and feeding. The only thing that a culture requires for active growth is sandy loam, drained, loose and nutritious soils. On waterlogged, saline, waterlogged and heavy soils, the gorgeous crocus feels defective, rarely blooms and is often affected by pests and diseases. Also, the plant needs good lighting, so it is preferable to plant it in open areas or with diffused light.
