For those who love the complexity and exoticism of the tropics, nature has created a liana bush with the beautiful name "Lapageria". Dark green leathery leaves and large bell flowers, as if molded from wax, adorn the long lashes
Rod Lapageria
Not many plants can boast that their genus is so unique that it consists of only one species. This is what
genus Lapageria (Lapageria), to which botanists have attributed only one plant species, calling it "Pink Lapageria".
Lapagheria pink
Lapagheria pink (Lapageria rosea), which was born in the tropics of South America, is a liana shrub that grows up to 10 meters in height. In "domesticated" conditions, it does not behave so smartly, but it can grow up to 5 meters, twisting its lignified stem around itself.
Many different garden forms and varieties of evergreen liana, which are distinguished by a special decorative effect, have been bred from a natural species.
The curly stem of the vine is covered with dark green leathery leaves of a lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate shape, which already give the bush a decorative effect.
But the main decoration of the plant are large (up to 8 cm long) bell flowers, which seem to be sculpted from carmine pink beeswax. Single or in groups of two or three flowers, forming apical brushes, they bloom by the arrival of summer, drooping to the ground with their delightful graceful petals.
Wealth of colors of garden forms
Flowers of garden forms, obtained from a natural plant, departed from the traditional carmine pink color, dressing up in a whitish (variety"
White-flowered"), White with pink stripes (variety"
Variegated white-flowered") Colors, or intensified the color intensity of natural clothing (variety"
Gorgeous ), Increasing the size of the flower.
Growing
Unfortunately, such beauty cannot be saved from our frosts, and therefore Lapageria is grown in large pots or flowerpots, which are removed with the arrival of cold weather from balconies, terraces and garden pavilions into the warmth of rooms where the temperature does not drop below plus 7 degrees.
Indoors, the most illuminated place is allocated for it, while when grown outdoors, a tub is determined in partial shade, protected from the winds, to create the illusion of the tropics.
The soil for the plant needs acidic. If there is none at the time of planting, peat can be added to acidify the soil. Watering, with the exception of the winter period, should be regular, maintaining constant soil moisture. At the same time, one should not allow stagnation of water, which is destructive for most plants. In the spring-summer period, to maintain the nutritional value of the soil, mineral fertilizing is carried out at intervals of once every two to three weeks. For such feeding, 20 grams of complex mineral fertilizer per ten-liter bucket is enough.
To make it convenient for the plant to position its multi-meter stem, they arrange a special support, which can be made from thick metal wire or other available material. Before spring awakening, the plants are removed to maintain their appearance.
When the capacity of the plant becomes too small, it is transplanted into a larger container. As a rule, such transplants are carried out every 2-3 years. If the capacity suits Lapageria, then partial replacement of the old soil with fresh one can be dispensed with.
Reproduction
Lapageria can be propagated by seeds if you have a strong nervous system and you know how to wait. The fact is that seeds germinate for a very long time, the process can take a month and a half, during which you can forget about them. And the plant will begin to bloom in three years.
Therefore, as a rule, flower growers go in a simpler way, propagating the liana with summer cuttings, or with April or October layering, dropping in the lower lashes. After 2 years, you will get a full-fledged plant that can be separated from the mother.
Enemies
Enemies include high pH, high soil density, and insects.
