Vanda blue (lat. Vanda coerulea) - a species of herbaceous epiphytic plants of the genus Vanda (Latin Vanda), belonging to the Orchid family (Latin Orchidaceae). The orchid prefers to live on trees, the crowns of which do not shade it too much from the sun's rays of the warm light of Southeast Asia. This is the only species among the many orchids of the planet, the flowers of which are painted in true blue. Wanda blue flower juice is used medicinally to help maintain good vision and youthful skin.
What's in your name
The Latin name of the genus "Vanda" originates in the Sanskrit language, which was the name of the orchid, which sounds like "Vandaar" (Vandaare).
It is much easier to understand the specific epithet “coerulea”, since a dictionary translation of the Latin word meaning “blue” in Russian is sufficient.
Botanical name synonyms
Like many orchids, the official name of this plant species has many synonymous names that have been assigned to it by various botanists. For example, the British botanist Robert Allen Rolfe (1855 - 1921), who closely studied orchids, owns such names as "Vanda coerulea delicata" and "Vanda coerulea rogersii", given to the same plant at different times.
Description
Epiphytic plants with airy whitish-grayish-green roots hanging from trees with powerful shaggy beards.
Relatively thick (up to 1, 5 (one and a half) centimeters thick) strong plant stems have a length of 5 (five) to 23 (twenty three) centimeters, bearing two rows of leathery belt-like fleshy leaves. Dark green leaves up to 3 (three) centimeters wide and from 7 (seven) to 18 (eighteen) centimeters long at the end are stratified into two unequal lobes. The bunch of leaves is very decorative and creates an effective backdrop for the inflorescences.
One plant gives birth to 1 (one) to 3 (three) racemose inflorescences located on rather long peduncles. The length of strong peduncles varies from 20 (twenty) to 42 (forty two) centimeters. Depending on the length of the peduncle, from 4 (four) to 16 (sixteen) blue-blue flowers can be located on it.
Quite large flowers can reach 9 (nine) centimeters in diameter. It is the only orchid in the world to have blue-blue flower petals that mimic the color of the heavens. On a blue background of petals, nature has drawn intricate drawings of a lighter shade, reminiscent of the finest ligature of a cobweb or parallels and meridians of the globe. The petal-lip, which has a pointed spur, is also painted in sky blue.
In the wild, flowering lasts for two months, falling in autumn, October and November, when the air is warm and its humidity is 70 to 90 percent.
Usage
The sky-blue color of Wanda's flowers, unusual for numerous orchids, turns the plant into a popular one, in demand for cultivation in various greenhouses around the world. In particular, Wanda Blue can be admired in the famous Nong Nooch Park, located near the resort town of Pattaya in Thailand.
This orchid is not only an object of decorative pleasure, but also has healing powers. Vanda blue flower juice is used in medicine to maintain vision. Juice drops help fight eye diseases such as senile cataracts, glaucoma, and also relieve blindness.
