Rice is one of the favorite foods. This nourishing and very useful product is eaten by a good half of the people on our planet. Of course, you always want to stock it up for future use. And so that harmful worms, bugs or other equally nasty living creatures do not unexpectedly start in rice, it is important to learn how to store it correctly. Under good conditions, rice can lie for quite a long time, and at the same time it will not lose either its taste or its nutritional properties
Dry rice
One of the most valuable qualities of rice is its relative simplicity in storage. In order to keep it in its best form, it is enough to try to maintain the optimal humidity and temperature in the room, as well as to prevent the appearance of all kinds of pests in every possible way.
Under especially favorable conditions, rice is excellently preserved for up to one and a half years. True, this does not apply to his polished brother, who can easily lie for more than one year. By the way, immediately after purchase, it is recommended to freeze rice at the lowest possible temperature or warm it up in the oven - then it will be better stored.
Ideally, rice should be stored in a regularly ventilated, sufficiently cool and dry place, well protected from direct sunlight. It is desirable to maintain the temperature in the range from five to fifteen degrees (eighteen maximum), and the best air humidity is considered to be in the range from 60 to 70%. It is also extremely important to try to avoid any sudden fluctuations in humidity or sudden temperature fluctuations.
Protection from bugs
To protect the stored rice from harmful bugs, it is recommended to add a few garlic cloves or dry lemon zest to the containers in which it is stored. If they are not at hand, you can also use hot peppers, bay leaves, or even chestnuts. And, oddly enough, iron corks from bottles, small pieces of foil or a metal spoon help to protect rice from the appearance of insects. Until now, it has not been possible to find an explanation for this fact, but, nevertheless, the fact remains. You can also put mint chewing gum in a container with rice - a single pad will be enough.
Protecting rice from mustiness and dampness
In order to provide the rice sent for storage the opportunity to "breathe" freely, you can pour it into clean linen bags. And before using such bags, they must be boiled in a strong saline solution - then mold will not start in the rice. As for rice stored in various containers, tiny gauze bags filled with salt will help keep it dry. The undoubted advantage of rigid containers is that it helps to reliably protect rice from moths and rodents.
Storage of exotic rice
In general, it is no different from storing ordinary rice. The only exception is the now popular shirataki rice. Since it is sold mostly frozen, it should be kept in the freezer. Opened packaging is allowed to be stored in the refrigerator for no more than a week.
Boiled rice
Of course, no matter how great the rice is, once it is cooked, it cannot be stored for a long time. If you store boiled rice in the refrigerator, then the maximum shelf life will be no more than five days. At the same time, you should not place it near too fragrant products - cooked rice perfectly absorbs any odors. For the same reason, it is recommended to store it in containers equipped with tight-fitting lids. By the way, ubiquitous food-grade plastic trays with lids are perfect for this purpose.
In addition, you can store boiled rice in the freezer - in this case, it can lie for up to thirty to forty days. And they defrost it by heating it in the microwave on the appropriate mode.
