Avocado is an incredibly nutritious and very healthy overseas guest, more and more often appearing on our tables both as a separate delicacy and as part of a wide variety of dishes. Avocados are loved by both adults and children, and this is not surprising - the wonderful fruits are very rich in vitamins. To enjoy the unique taste of these unusual fruits for as long as possible, it is important to understand how to choose them correctly and how to store them

How to choose?

If the avocado is planned to be consumed on the day of its purchase or the next day, then it is necessary to choose fully ripe fruits. It is not difficult to recognize them: they are quite soft to the touch, and if you press lightly on them, then tiny dents remain on the fruits. The flesh of a ripe avocado is always soft - it can be compared to a slightly melting butter. In addition, from absolutely ripe fruits, as well as from boiled potatoes, a green dense skin should easily come off.

Ripe avocados are stored in the refrigerator at four to six degrees. If the fruits have not yet ripened, then for early ripening they are placed in a dark place, the temperature in which is in the range from nineteen to twenty-three degrees. Typically, it takes one to three weeks for an avocado to ripen. And before sending unripe fruits to the refrigerator, it is recommended to wrap them with paper, however, it is better not to store unripe avocados in the refrigerator, as it significantly slows down the process of fruit ripening.

It is noted that in paper bags, avocados ripen much faster - if without these fruits ripen for at least a week, then if they are available, the ripening process is accelerated to three to five days. And so that the fruits ripen even faster, you can put a banana or an apple in a bag with an avocado - then the ripening period can be reduced to two to three days. The fact is that paper bags perfectly retain ethylene gas released by ripening fruits. Ripening bananas and apples are very active in releasing this substance, and it, in turn, has an effect on the early ripening of avocados.

Delayed ripening avocados should be checked daily. To understand whether these bizarre fruits are finally ripe, they are lightly squeezed. If avocados give in, then they can be eaten. And if solid dents remain on the fruits, it means that they are already overripe.

If the temperature does not drop below six degrees in the refrigerator in the fresh zone, the avocado can easily be stored for three to five days. And about the sixth or seventh day, ripe fruits begin to lose their aroma and gradually darken.

Avocados can also be stored at room temperature. For this purpose, it is placed in a closet or in a pantry, inaccessible to the sun's rays. The ideal storage temperature will be between eighteen and twenty-four degrees. At room temperature, avocados can last for about a week.

Cut fruit

Often, hostesses are faced with the fact that a particular recipe involves the use of only part of an avocado. What to do with cut fruits and prevent their rapid spoilage? The fruits left in the open air quickly oxidize and darken, and they darken even in cooked dishes, as a result of which the latter lose their former attractiveness, and the fruits themselves look as if they have deteriorated long ago.

Ascorbic acid and lemon or lime juice help to preserve the natural color of avocados - if you resort to their help, you can easily protect the fruits from extremely undesirable browning. And you can cover the cut fruits with cling film or paper - if you exclude air access to the places of the cuts, then the fruits will be perfectly preserved both on the table and in the refrigerator.
