A shady area is one of the problem areas of any garden. Every gardener thinks about how to equip such a zone so that during the entire gardening period it will delight the eye with rich colors and a magical aroma. Many amateur gardeners are sure that shady areas cannot be decorated as much as possible, such as, for example, a flower bed or a mixborder located in the open sun, but this is not at all the case. In its beauty, a shady flower garden with correctly selected plants is in no way inferior to any other blooming composition
A shady flower garden is a great addition to any garden. Undoubtedly, compositions composed of plants with openwork foliage and flowers, located along the fence, along the garden paths of paths, near the walls of a house or outbuildings, as well as under the crowns of large trees, will give their owner and those around him a good mood from contemplating such indescribable beauty. For some, this may come as a surprise, but shady flower beds can be very diverse, because the range of modern garden shops is so great that sometimes "eyes run up".
Shade flower beds can be made in different stylistic directions, be it regular, landscape or rustic style. The latter of these has recently been very popular among gardeners, especially for those who do not have enough time to care for flower beds. And be that as it may, shadow compositions are a kind of "mirror" of wild nature, since forest plants are taken as its basis.
Creation and design of a shady flower garden
Plants with expressive openwork foliage are the main component of shadow compositions. A riot of colors in the shadow zone should not be expected, because the color of the flowers of most flower crops has a dull character (compared to plants grown in intensely lit areas). When creating such flower beds, all the rules of landscape design are taken into account. So, horizontal lines alternate with vertical ones, for example, tall mignonette or loosestrife are combined with dwarf nasturtium, garden geraniums and pansies. Shade flower beds are supplemented with ampelous plants (plants grown in hanging pots, flowerpots and pots), such crops can be lavatera, petunia, pelargonium, lobelia and others.
It will not be possible to grow a high-quality lawn on shady areas, since the main requirement of lawn grass is good lighting, therefore such places are decorated with garden sprinkling or shade-loving soil plants. The first option is a great addition to the garden. Garden cover keeps moisture in the soil for as long as possible, which is simply vital for many crops. It can also act as a kind of mulch that protects plants from dirty splashes during watering.
The following materials are most common as garden sprinkles: fine gravel, colored chips, crushed stone, decorative floristic glass, crushed wood ash, pine or spruce cones. And in order for the garden sprinkling to serve its owner as long as possible, a special non-woven material from a polymer melt or any other similar material is laid on the surface of the earth under it. As a rule, the consumption of sprinkles is indicated on the label, for example, the consumption of gravel or crushed stone is 70-80 kg per 1 sq. m.
Rocky compositions look no less interesting in shady areas. The stones are arranged in a random position, and small stones are combined with large relief specimens. It should be understood that a โbareโ playground, consisting only of stones, does not diversify or decorate a shady corner, therefore they are supplemented with various plants, including ornamental trees and shrubs.
Choosing plants for a shade flower garden
If we consider the assortment of shade-tolerant plants, then it is almost impossible to find bright flowering species among them, but even pale shades can diversify any shady flower garden. Most of them have beautiful openwork foliage and an interesting shape, they easily develop under the crowns of tall shrubs and trees, such as cherry, plum, bird cherry, aspen, oak, pine or birch.
Among the conifers there are also shade-tolerant species, such are: juniper, Canadian hemlock, Korean fir, balsam fir, common spruce, gray spruce. No less harmoniously will fit into the shady flower garden: cypress, thuja, derain, andromeda, cotoneaster, tartar honeysuckle, fragrant raspberries, holly mahonia. Hosts, periwinkle, various types of ferns, badan, horny goat weed, anemone, kupena, lily of the valley, tenaciousness, elecampane, European hoof, dark geranium, arizema, stonecrop, heart-leaved tiarka, etc. will look great in shadow compositions.
Suitable for cultivation in waterlogged shady areas: anemone oak, volzhanka, black cohosh, astilbe, hellebore, ostrich, male dwarf, dignified chitus and primrose. It is recommended to grow in shady flower beds with diffused light: daylilies, fragrant woodruff, lupines, lungwort, peppermint, lemon balm and spring navel.
