Looking at the fruits of the Banana, which today can be purchased in Russian stores all year round, the imagination draws a tall tree, lavishly decorated with yellow fruits hanging from the branches. Those who have seen a Banana growing in nature will only smile skeptically at such an imagination
Perennial grass
Although the plant is as tall and tough as many trees, Banana is botanically just a perennial herb.
But this is not some Dandelion, which many gardeners do not like so much, and not even the powerful Burdock, annoyingly clinging to a person's clothes, but a giant grass that rises to the heavens to a height of 15 meters. A medium-sized crocodile could comfortably sit on one sheet, because with a width of 1 meter, the length of the leaf reaches 6 meters. The Russian Lopukh can only dream of such sizes.
Of course, it is more difficult for Burdock to build up such power, because he has to take a break in winter, when life in the plant stops. Banana grows in a warm and humid climate and does not know what snow and frost are.
Fast growing grass
Therefore, a Banana needs only a couple of months more from planting to fruiting than a woman to carry a baby. True, a woman, following the first child, is able to give the world a second, third …, but a banana shoot gives fruits only once, and then dies, giving way to new shoots.
Due to its powerful dimensions, Banana does not rely on pollinating insects, and therefore many plant species open their flowers at night and use the services of bats that go in the dark in search of food.
Homeland of Banana
Banana was born in Southeast Asia long before our era, judging by the written sources that have survived to this day. Moreover, the Almighty created it, apparently, not for human nutrition, since the fruits of Bananas growing in the wild are heavily stuffed with seeds, which prevents people from feasting on them.
But an earthly crazy wind managed to cross-pollinate two of God's creatures, as a result of which a Banana grew with tasty and nutritious fruits to the delight of the large population of the region.
Other peoples envied such a gift and quickly spread the seeds and layering around the world, where there are warm and humid tropics. True, there are practically no seeds in an edible banana, therefore reproduction by shoots turned out to be more productive.
Banana Versatility
People don't just use the nutritious fruits of Banana. There is an assumption that, before the successful pollination of the accidental wind, the edible roots of the plant served as food. When people switched to eating fruits, they began to forget about the edible roots.
Banana does not have a stem, in the traditional sense of this part of herbal herbs. But the leaves that grow in such a way that each subsequent one seems to grow out of the previous one, which takes care of it, as a result they form a so-called false stem. So, these false stems are excellent materials for light unsinkable rafts, fishing tackle, and comfortable seating cushions that are much more pleasant than hard chairs.
The false stem of some types of Banana is used to make a coarse fiber called Manila Hemp or Abaca. Ropes and cables made of such hemp are indispensable on sea vessels due to their unique unsinkability.
The finer fiber from Banana leaves is woven into the fabrics from which traditional clothing is made.
Banana leaves in Asian countries are used as dishes, serving food on them, similar to the Burdock leaves used by resourceful summer residents and tourists on their hikes. Food on such natural plates seems tastier and more nutritious. Plates of young leaves can be eaten with the contents, or taken to the compost heap, freeing the hostess from washing dishes.
And many more useful things are made from a plant called "Banana".
