In the last article, we decided how to choose the right seedlings. Today I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the rules for preparing seedlings for planting, as well as with the planting and watering itself.

In the last article, we decided how to choose the right seedlings.

How to choose the right seedlings for the garden

Now let's start landing. First of all, you need to divide the site so that the grown trees do not interfere with each other later. There is a certain minimum required area for fruit trees.

The apple tree needs most of the space; the area for it should be at least 3x4 meters in size. A little less space is required for a pear - 3x3 meters. For plums, 2x3 meters are enough, least of all are given to cherries - only 2x2 meters. For other trees, the area of their plots should be approximately 3x3 meters.

Rules for the preparation of planting holes

So, everything is decided with the landing sites. Now we are preparing the landing pits. The size of the "hole" suitable for planting our tree is rather big: its diameter should be about a meter, and its depth should be 70-80 centimeters. At the bottom of the pit we pour peat or a special mixture of fertilizers (for example, this: compost or manure - 1.5-2 buckets, wood ash - 1.5 kg, double superphosphate and potassium chloride - 1 kg each). We add soil to fertilizers or peat, mix, take out part of the pit, since we will use it directly for planting a seedling. By the way, if the soil in your region is heavy, then be sure to add 1-2 buckets of sand to the planting mixture of soil with fertilizers. This will make the ground lighter and more crumbly. It will not become clumped around the root of our seedling.

Cooking seedlings

After preparing the pits, we turn to our seedlings. Once again, we carefully examine the planting material, check the roots, trunk, buds. If the roots of the seedling are slightly dry, then we put it in a bucket of water for a day. If not only the roots are dry, but also the bark (it usually becomes wrinkled), then we put the entire seedling in a container with water for a day.

After that, we remove the damaged, dried, frostbitten, rotten and diseased roots. We examine the crown, remove diseased and dried branches. In addition, if the root system is poorly developed or the size of the crown greatly exceeds the size of the root, we prune the crown.

Also, crown pruning is done so that the seedling quickly adapts to a new place and begins active growth.

Place the seedling in a bucket of cool water for 2 hours before planting. This will allow the planting material to be saturated with water and will allow our seedling to survive the transplant more easily.

Planting process

Everything is ready for planting seedlings, so we proceed directly to the process itself. At the bottom of the pit, from the previously filled up mixture of earth, peat (fertilizers) and sand, we make a small mound, on which we carefully place the seedling so that the root neck of the planting materials is 3-5 centimeters above the edge of the pit. Now carefully and evenly place the roots of the plant on the planting pit and slowly fill the seedling with prepared earth.

When filling the seedling, make sure that no voids are formed. After our plant is planted, carefully compact the soil around it. You can just trample underfoot. Then we drive in a small wooden or metal peg, to which we attach the seedling.

A few words about watering seedlings

The final touch remains: watering the seedling. Watering should be abundant, so carefully fill our future tree with two or three buckets of water. Then sprinkle thoroughly with peat or straw to keep moisture in the soil longer.

Our seedlings have been planted, it remains only to make sure that they do not lean to the side and the roots of the plant are not exposed. If such a nuisance did happen. Don't be upset. Water the seedling well with water, then very gently return the plant to its original position and cover with earth.

If the seedling is planted in the spring, then be sure to treat the trunk with copper sulfate and whiten it. This will avoid sunburn and pest infestations.
