For a long time, various exotic fruits have regularly appeared on the shelves of our shopping centers. Of course, fruits such as bananas, oranges, kiwi are no longer considered exotic for us, we treat them like that, like they grow in each of us in the garden. I would like to draw your attention to such an exotic fruit as pomelo (pamela), which has recently taken its place on supermarket shelves. A lot of fables have been heard about this fruit, who say that it is a hybrid of melon and grapefruit, who say that this is a new species of mandarin, but all this is a misconception about this fruit. Yes, pomelo is a representative of citrus fruits, but it is not at all tangerine and not a hybrid of melon and grapefruit, but a completely separate fruit
Cultivation and varieties of pomelo
Initially, the pomelo was grown in China, southeast Malaysia, Asia, as well as on the islands of Fiji and Tonga. At the present time, the pomelo is successfully cultivated in many warm countries. The huge size of the fruit cannot but attract attention. Pomelo is an evergreen tree that can reach 10-15 meters in height and bear fruit up to 10 kilograms. Impressive! The only pity is that such giants are not imported in our supermarkets. Basically, fruits weighing 1-2 kilograms are imported to us. None of the citrus can boast of such size, as the pomelo is the largest of its "brothers". In Thailand, the following varieties of pomelo are often found:
• Khao horn is a bright yellow-green fruit, spherical in shape, pleasant aroma and sweet white flesh.
• Khao namphung is a pear-shaped fruit with a yellow-green skin and a juicy, sweet yellow-white flesh.
• Khao paen - pomelo in the form of a flattened ball, like the previous varieties, with a yellow-green skin, white sweet-sour pulp.
• Khao phuang is a pear-shaped fruit with a distinct "head", a greenish-yellow skin and a yellow-white sweet-sourish pulp.
• Thongdi is a spherical fruit with a dark green skin and a slightly pink sweet and juicy pulp.
The most famous varieties are Khao horn and Thongdi. Most of all, Thai people love the taste of these particular types of pomelo.
What is the use of a pomelo?
You can talk about the benefits of pomelo forever! It contains a large amount of vitamin C, which will help protect our body from colds in the fall and winter. Also, pomelo is very rich in potassium, which stimulates the heart muscle and limonoids, substances that prevent the formation of cancer cells. The pomelo peel contains essential oils, the aroma of which not only lifts the mood and smells sweet in the room, but is also able to return the former acuteness and passion in the relationship of spouses. By placing the sliced crusts in a bowl on your bedside table, you will be pleasantly surprised by the effect the scent produces. Also, this fruit is also a dietary fruit, its calorie content is 30-38 kcal.
Pomelo juice and pulp are very good at suppressing appetite and quenching thirst. For many, I think it will be interesting that pomelo helps lower blood pressure. Also, regular consumption of juicy pulp and juice of this amazing fruit prevents the development of atherosclerosis. In some countries, pomelo-based drugs are used to treat asthma, coughs, abdominal pains, tumors, and gastrointestinal disorders.
Choosing a pomelo
It is important to have an idea of how to choose a delicious ripe pomelo. It is necessary to pay attention to the peel, it should be smooth, shiny and soft, but not strong, but slightly. A pronounced pleasant aroma also indicates that the fruit is ripe.
