Progress does not stand still - from year to year, modern summer residents discover new gadgets that can significantly facilitate their difficult, but at the same time very important work. The garden shredder is no exception! By the way, abroad this has long been - the most ordinary and familiar device for many summer residents! So let's get to know: what kind of device is it, what is it for, and is it really worth buying?
How a smart device works
A garden shredder is a very simple object at first glance: it looks like a solid steel frame with a rather spacious funnel located on it. This hopper is equipped with a special control system and powerful cutting mechanisms, and it is into it that all the raw materials that need to be crushed are loaded. In addition, almost all garden shredders are equipped with a pair of wheels attached to the bottom of the frame, which makes it easy to move them around the site (only do this when turned off!).
This faithful assistant will easily grind all kinds of garden waste, turning it into a full-fledged fertilizer and significantly reducing the maturation period of the compost if carefully chopped raw materials are sent to this very compost.
The miracle gadget crushes any raw material with the help of two knives rotating in one plane or with the help of special cutters. And it also happens that the device includes both types of mechanisms at once! In addition, there are shredders equipped with turbine, screw or spiral cutting mechanisms. In general, the majority of garden shredders can boast of having two sets of knives at once: the main purpose of the first set is coarse cutting of raw materials, and the second set is designed for more "fine" grinding.
How to choose the right one?
The range of modern garden shredders simply cannot fail to impress, therefore, before you go for the coveted purchase, it is important to understand exactly what requirements a "smart" device will have to meet. And far from the last role in this case will be played by the type of engine, which can be both gasoline and electric, that is, choppers for leaves, branches and grass can work with equal success on any of these engines. Nevertheless, it is the gasoline engines that are considered to be the most powerful - they are endowed with the ability to easily chop branches up to seven and a half centimeters thick, while the capabilities of electric-powered shredders are limited to a maximum of four centimeters thick branches. In addition, gasoline-powered shredders are much easier to move around the site as they are not “tied” to the length of the power cord. However, such shredders are more difficult to use, and their engines are distinguished by impressive sensitivity to the quality of the fuel used in them - some manufacturers even voice recommendations for preparing special mixtures for them! In addition, such engines make much louder noise, and their price is much higher!
If we are talking about productivity, then it will be quite high for all shredders without exception - even a small electric shredder of average power quietly grinds up to two hundred kilograms of wood in an hour! And such a device can boast of much greater convenience in work - it is very easy to move it around the site, and its weight is not too heavy (as a rule, it ranges from fifteen to twenty kilograms). And the quality of grinding in this case simply cannot fail to impress - in any case, the wood will be turned into almost sawdust, which will allow not only laying it in compost heaps, but also very successfully using it as mulch! And with such raw materials as foliage, grass, twigs and stems, this assistant will do just fine: with a light movement of the knives, he will safely grind potato peels, and cabbage stalks, and paper, and spruce cones, and all kinds of fruits, and everything in general. - everything that will be loaded into it! As for the quality of the compost prepared using crushed raw materials, it will be significantly higher! Moreover, the compost in this case will rot not in a few years, but in just a few months! So it will hardly be advisable to chase the increased power of the device - too thick branches will go well for firewood, and a less powerful gadget will perfectly cope with all the rest of the raw materials!
