Imagining your diet without beets is very difficult. It is indispensable for dishes such as borscht and beetroot. Many delicious, hearty and healthy salads are prepared from it - vinaigrette, boiled beets with prunes, baked beets with cottage cheese, pickled Korean. They even make desserts from beets! Moreover, beet juice is used to treat a huge list of diseases. And it is stored for a long time, providing us with vitamins in the winter. But, much to the chagrin of gardeners, not every owner of a backyard is able to grow good root crops. What can prevent beets from growing? And how to eliminate these troubles once and for all?
When to sow beets
First, let's talk about the timing of sowing beets. Despite their somewhat thick-skinned appearance, beets, unlike carrots, are not intended for early crops. The optimal dates are May days. In what decade to sow - the weather outside the window will tell. Experienced gardeners recommend starting sowing no earlier than until the soil warms up to + 8 … + 10 ° С.
Experimenting and sowing beets before winter is not worth it. This will cause the beets to go into the arrow. The same effect will be obtained if the seeding is done too early. But there is an exception to this rule - these are varieties that are intended specifically for winter crops. This should be indicated on the seed package.
What soil to sow beets
Beets will not grow well in heavy clay soil. Here she will tie a root crop for a long time, it will not grow large, and it will be badly stored too.
Such soil must be loosened. Sand is not the best option for this. It has no nutritional value, and beets require well-seasoned soil, which, moreover, has moisture-consuming properties. Therefore, it is better, if possible, to choose one of these options:
• humus;
• compost;
• rotted sawdust.
Damp sawdust should not be brought in, because they draw nitrogen out of the soil. Therefore, before embedding them in the ground, it is very important to stand them, for example, in manure. When there is no manure, the sawdust is brought to the desired condition by processing with nitrogen fertilizers. Well, before sowing beets, the soil should be dug up.
Owners of areas with heavy clay soils can still adopt this trick. Choose for your gardens those varieties that hide only a bearded tail in the ground, and the root crop itself grows almost on the soil surface like kohlrabi or looks like a daikon.
Seedling care
Beets are grown by sowing directly into the ground. Given that not all seeds will sprout, the sowing is made thick. But when shoots appear, time should not be wasted - proceed to thinning. Remove those that were initially late to ascend and are smaller than the rest. Otherwise, they will start competing for a "place in the sun" and there will be a slowdown in the growth of neighboring root crops. A distance of at least 7 cm is maintained between the seedlings.
Sometimes it is advised not to throw out the plucked-out plants and plant them on a separate bed. But the benefit from this will be dubious, because the roots will already be damaged. And the root crop can turn out to be of an irregular shape.
Thinning alone on a beet bed will not be enough. When the root crops grow up, you need to remove the excess again, leaving about 20 cm between the ones remaining in the garden.
Insufficient moisture can inhibit growth. Therefore, when the dry period sets in and there is no rain for a long time, the gardener has to compensate for the lack of water himself. The consumption rate is approximately 12-15 liters of water per 1 square meter, and on sandy soil - up to 20 liters.
Another danger of dry and hot weather is overheating of the soil, which is also very disliked by beets. Therefore, it is recommended to mulch the beds.
To protect the beets from the scorching sun, do not make beds in the shade. This vegetable prefers outdoor areas. The best solution is grass, straw or compost mulch.
