Every year more and more questions arise, especially from novice gardeners. You have to revise many sites to find an answer to an exciting topic. I would like to shorten your search time, answer some of the most frequent of them. Today we are opening a series of answers to questions, consisting of several articles about cabbage
Why does broccoli bloom?
Not all gardeners manage to grow large, dense broccoli cabbage heads. And so you want to have this vegetable, useful in all respects, on your table! Plants turn into bloom ahead of time.
There are several reasons for this phenomenon:
• lack of moisture or nutrition in the soil;
• excess fertilization during the head formation phase;
• abnormal heat over 25 degrees;
• delay in harvesting;
• landing in the shade.
If the cabbage has bloomed, it's too late to wave your hands. This process can no longer be stopped. It is necessary to take timely measures.
Ways to solve the problem
Any culture does not forgive the neglect of the gardener. It often seems to us that it is enough to plant a plant, weed it, and then we rely on Mother Nature. The rains will pour, the worms will loosen, the sun will warm. In every business, you need to put in a lot of effort to get an excellent harvest.
Let's answer the question: "How to prevent cabbage flowering?"
To do this, you must follow a number of rules:
1. Guess the landing dates.
2. Optimally fertilize and moisten the soil before transplanting seedlings into open ground.
3. Provide fractional, balanced nutrition according to growth phases.
4. Use fertilizers with trace elements.
5. Regular watering.
6. Plant in a well-lit place.
Let's go through all the points in more detail.
Landing dates
Make calculations for a specific variety when it enters the head-tying phase. During this period, the temperature outside should not exceed 18-20 degrees. Early varieties are planted in the last decade of April. They withstand light morning frosts well. In case of severe cold snap, they cover with a piece of film through boxes, or cut plastic bottles are placed on each plant. Cleaning in June will avoid overheating of the heads.
Harvesting of late varieties is planned for the first ten days of September. Seedlings are planted a little later than usual to get away from the heat. In the middle of summer, broccoli heads are well tied only in the northern regions.
Balanced diet
Avoid large, one-time doses of mineral fertilizers. Stretch the top dressing for the entire growing season. Consider the requirements of the culture. Different batteries are required at each time interval.
At the beginning of growth, there is a need for nitrogen fertilizers. You can partially replace them by introducing them when planting organic rotted composts.
When forming the head, a phosphorus-potassium composition with the addition of trace elements (magnesium, molybdenum, boron) is suitable. These requirements are met by the fertilizer "Zdraven" a tablespoon in a bucket of water.
They are fed three times with a liquid form of humate with microelements:
• after rooting of seedlings;
• 2 weeks after the first treatment;
• at the beginning of head formation.
Further, until the end of the growing season, they are limited to clean watering.
Watering mode
An even distribution of moisture throughout the season is the key to successful broccoli cultivation. Stick to the middle ground. Waterlogging threatens bacterial diseases, a lack of moisture will lead to blooming. The optimal watering regime is 2-3 times a week, depending on weather conditions.
Modern automatic drip irrigation systems will help out gardeners who come only on weekends to the country. With this method, the required amount of moisture is maintained in the root area.
Loosening after watering, mulching the soil with straw, humus, peat, sawdust, will allow you to keep the optimal supply of water in the habitat of the root system longer.
Landing place, cleaning
Plant broccoli in sunny areas. In extreme heat, lightly shading the heads with wide plates of burdock. Experienced vegetable growers practice the technique of binding the covering leaves in the phase of the beginning of the formation of the food part.
The harvest is cut in several terms. First, remove the large central head. Then the lateral (smaller), formed from the adventitious buds.
By observing all of the above recommendations, you will always be with an excellent harvest of broccoli.
