The harmful turtle is one of the worst enemies of cereal crops. Moreover, this parasite is able to penetrate into barns and granaries, causing great harm to them. Even if harmful turtles do not completely destroy the plantings, grains from damaged plants still become unusable
About the harmful turtle
This pest is distributed mainly in the southeast of the steppe and forest-steppe. And the Kirov and Voronezh regions belong to the zones of centers of their mass reproduction. Harmful turtle damages corn, oats, rye, barley, wheat, and sometimes also beets, sainfoin and sunflower. The body of these insects is broadly oval, 6 - 7 mm wide and 9 - 13 mm long. Bed bugs can be light gray, dark gray, light brown or black in color. Insect eggs are about 1 mm in size. Freshly laid eggs are green; they gradually darken, and already on the fifth or sixth day, an embryo is noticeable, resembling an anchor in shape. Throughout the year, the harmful turtle gives only one generation. Fecundity of females averages 30 - 40 eggs, but sometimes it can reach 400 eggs.
Adults hibernate in forests and shelter belts, under plant remains, fallen leaves, and a little less often in gardens and other tree plantations. Insects for wintering are selected well-ventilated and illuminated areas with loose broad-leaved litter and low soil moisture. As soon as the litter warms up to 12-14 degrees in spring, the harmful turtle wakes up from sleep, and when the temperature reaches 16-17 degrees, it gets out to the surface. Pests begin to fly to wheat crops en masse when the temperature is at least 18 - 19 degrees will last for three to five days.
One of the characteristic features of the life cycle of harmful turtles is migration. According to the intensity of migrations, the sedentary and migratory types of populations of these insects differ. During the migration period, individuals of the migratory type are able to travel considerable distances (150-200 km) from their wintering sites to grain crops and back.
How to deal with a harmful turtle
To prevent the appearance of a harmful turtle, preventive work is very important. It is best to take planting material of varieties that are highly resistant to pest infestation. Weeds should be regularly destroyed and the soil fertilized with various phosphorus and potassium preparations. The ripe crop must be harvested in a timely manner. It is useful to plant areas with wild vegetation near fields and vegetable gardens. Gradually, they are inhabited by birds, spiders, ants and beetles - enemies of the harmful turtle.
In relatively small areas, you can fight this parasite with the help of chickens - each chicken can destroy about one and a half thousand harmful turtles per day. The disappearance of harmful turtles can also be achieved by watering their habitats with acetic acid. It is inexpensive, and it is quite possible to find it in almost any store. The procedure is carried out once a week by pouring acetic acid into a special sprinkler.
Denatured alcohol is also considered a powerful tool. 150 ml of denatured alcohol is mixed with 5 g of talin and treated with the resulting mixture of the habitat of parasites. Among the chemicals used to combat harmful turtles, it is worth noting "Mavrik", "Fastak", "Decis", "Aktara", "Karate Zeon" and others. In order to avoid addiction of insects to these drugs, it is recommended to change the formulations from time to time. The processing of plants is started as soon as the ear reaches milk ripeness: active settlement of plots and fields occurs at that moment. Spraying carried out during this period is considered the most effective. If you use the insecticide "Aktara" for treatment, harmful turtles lose their ability to feed literally within an hour, and their complete poisoning occurs in a day. When using the drug "Karate Zeon" they die even faster - in just a few hours. Moreover, the above drugs help to get rid of a fairly large number of dangerous pests.

Parasites inflict especially serious harm on underdeveloped crops in the spring, piercing the bases of still immature stems
