The benefits of onion peel

Onion peels are very rich in all kinds of beneficial compounds. It contains the most powerful antioxidant quercetin, phytoncides, vitamins of the B group, as well as vitamins A, PP, E and C. There are many essential microelements and valuable organic acids in it.

How is this waste product useful for plants? Onion peel actively stimulates their development, enhances growth, and also strengthens them and grants them immunity from a great variety of ailments. However, it is famous not only for its nutritional properties, but also for its powerful disinfecting effect - it is the onion husk that helps to protect growing crops from all kinds of pathogens that live in the soil. And it is also widely used for spraying vegetation against various pests (remedies based on it are especially effective in the fight against the codling moth, Colorado potato beetle, aphids, thrips and spider mites) and from the pathogens of a number of ailments lurking on the surfaces of fruits, flowers, leaves and bark … And, of course, you can use the harvested husk as a valuable fertilizer.

What crops would be grateful for such a feeding?

It is allowed to feed onion skins absolutely any crops cultivated on the site. By "revitalizing" the plants that have begun to wither, it brings them into tone in the shortest possible time. If yellowed leaves were found on growing crops, you can immediately begin to prepare a saving infusion of onion peels.

The most responsive to feeding with onion husks are carrots, peppers, tomatoes, as well as zucchini, pumpkin and cucumbers.

How to prepare onion skins?

The husks removed from the onion during the cleaning process are thoroughly dried (for this they are laid out on a newspaper or on a clean sheet of paper), and then put away in a box or cloth bag - this is where it will be stored until the moment of use.

How to fertilize a vegetable garden with onion peels?

For spraying, decoctions and infusions of onion husks are usually prepared, and pre-chopped raw materials are added immediately to the soil immediately before planting seedlings or adult plants.

You can also prepare a very effective infusion for feeding. To do this, a glass of onion husks is poured into a bucket filled almost to the brim with water, after which they put the container on the fire and bring its contents to a boil. After removing from the heat, the resulting composition is insisted for about two to three hours, and after this time it is immediately filtered. The plants are watered with the finished infusion using a spacious watering can - both under the root and over the leaves. And the husks that remain after straining are suitable for adding to the compost.

And in order to prepare a solution for spraying against pests and diseases, four glasses of onion husks are poured with two liters of hot water. When the mixture is infused for about two days, it is filtered and diluted with water (the amount of water in this case should be twice the amount of the solution). Treatments with such a solution are carried out at least three times, observing a weekly interval.

What else is the husk useful for?

This valuable raw material will be an excellent helper for increasing the storage time of the harvested crop, as well as for protecting it from being attacked by extremely unpleasant fungal diseases during storage. To make this possible, before storage, the harvested crop is powdered with chopped and pre-dried onion husks.
