Dahlias flaunt against the background of an autumn flower garden. Five lavishly flowering shrubs will replace fifty shrubs of annuals that have gone on winter vacation. A single bush, planted in the background of the mixborder, creates a bright spot of color, be it white, red, orange or any other color. But the nights of stable low temperatures are getting closer and closer to the garden, recalling the digging of root tubers. Timely and correct digging will help to better preserve root tubers in winter
Beauty of autumn
The last annuals are withering away, and perennials are losing ground. In September-October, powerful bushes covered with large flowers of various shapes come to the fore.
Having begun flowering in mid-July with pompom and spherical forms, the dahlia adds cactus and decorative ones in August. True, the larger each dahlia inflorescence, the fewer inflorescences the bush adorns. But flowering continues for a long period, from the beginning of flowering in July to October, when the street temperature drops to minus one degree.
It's time to take care of the continuation of the life of the dahlias. Of course, you don't have to bother with digging and storing root tubers, but in the spring you can buy new ones, changing the color palette and the shape of the inflorescences. But those who are attached to their favorites and do not want to change them for new friends have to do some work.
Black leaves and the digging process
If the leaves on the dahlia bushes have begun to turn black, it's time to start digging out the root tubers. Stages of work:
1. The bush must be broken up.
2. Cut off the stem with pruning shears. The remaining 6-8 cm stalk should be alive, not yet frozen.
3. Dig a trench around the bush with a radius of 20 centimeters and a shovel bayonet deep.
4. Dig very carefully the root tubers, keeping in mind their fragility, fragility and weakness of attachment to the root collar.
5. It is strictly forbidden to pull on the remaining stem, so as not to tear off the roots from it.
6. Clean the root tuber from the ground by picking it up. Cut off small roots with pruning shears.
7. Rinse the root tuber with a gentle stream of water.
8. Dip it for 30 minutes in a pink solution of potassium permanganate for disinfection.
9. Write the name of the variety on the root club using a chemical pencil or ballpoint pen, or make a tag with the inscription.
Drying and storage
You can not dry root tubers in a warm room, because they very quickly get rid of moisture, turning into mummified monsters, from which new bushes are no longer destined to grow. For drying, you need a room with high air humidity (85-90%) and a small positive temperature. They are dried in such a room for 2-3 weeks.
Periodically, the root tubers are inspected for the appearance of rot. Places that have begun to rot are cut to healthy tissue, dusting the wounds with gray or crushed charcoal.
The source of the formation of rot is an infection that has fallen into the juicy tissues of the stem left when cutting the hemp. Then it spreads imperceptibly to the eye inside the soft tissues. Therefore, some growers advise scraping the juicy fabrics with a knife. First, clean the area around the root collar, between the skin of the left hemp and the skin of the root tuber. Then up from the neck by 5-7 centimeters. The remaining hemp tissue after such a procedure dries quickly, preventing rot from continuing its insidious business.
Large buds around the root collar can also serve as a source of rot. Therefore, it is better to break them down by sprinkling the wounds with charcoal or sulfur.
The storage temperature should be from 3 to 12 degrees with an air humidity of 60-80 percent. Root tubers are stored in boxes or plastic bags.
