Downy mildew of cucumbers, or downy mildew, can affect cucumbers that grow not only indoors, but also outdoors. First of all, this dangerous ailment attacks middle-aged leaves and old leaves. And to a large extent, its development is favored by abundant fogs and frequent dew. The loss of leaves by diseased plants negatively affects the process of fruit setting, as well as their full development. As a result of the defeat of downy mildew, they often die, and this happens in a fairly short time

A few words about the disease

On the upper sides of the leaves affected by peronospora (mainly along the veins), oily yellowish or yellowish-greenish small specks are formed. And on the undersides of cucumber leaves, at the same time, a bloom of lilac-grayish shades containing spores of a harmful fungus-pathogen is clearly visible.

As the misfortune develops, numerous specks become angular and acquire a brownish color. And the tissues in the affected areas often fall out. Gradually, the specks merge, and the leaves dry out entirely. If downy mildew attacked the cucumbers with special force, then only the stalks often remain from the leaves, and the leafless lashes quickly die. Ripe fruits on infected plants are extremely pale in color. In most cases, they are completely tasteless.

How to fight

When growing cucumbers, it is extremely important to follow the rules of crop rotation, as well as to promptly eliminate the remnants of vegetation and infected crops from the plots. Earlier than three years later, it is not worth returning pumpkin crops to their former sites. And it is best to plant cucumbers in the driest places.

Before planting the seeds, it is advisable to disinfect them by keeping them in water heated to fifty degrees for a twenty-minute period. Other types of their pre-sowing processing are also allowed. For example, all seeds can be treated with a preparation called Thiram.

It is very important to increase the general resistance of cucumbers to various ailments. For this purpose, a variety of organic and mineral fertilizers should be systematically applied. And in the midst of the growing season, foliar dressing is also very effective and incredibly useful. Most often, they use solutions of crystallin or nitroammophos in combination with trace elements such as zinc, molybdenum and boron.

Before downy mildew appears, every ten days the cucumber plantings are sprayed with copper chloroxide, "Polycarbacin", "Arcerid" or "Homecin". And green vegetables grown in the open field are recommended to be processed with Dakonil or Ridomil. For preventive purposes, the vegetation is often sprayed with "Quadris".

If the ailment nevertheless attacked the growing cucumbers, when the first symptoms of it are found, the crops are fed with potash fertilizers and treated with various fungicides. Biofungicides also have a restraining effect at the initial stage of downy mildew development. Also, when signs of a dangerous disease appear, it is allowed to spray the vegetation with a solution of potassium permanganate, which takes only 2 g for ten liters of water. You can also use "Kuproksat" and "Oxyhom".

In the event that the cucumber plantings are attacked by downy mildew quite strongly, they are sprayed with contact fungicides, which must be alternated with systemic ones, while adhering to the following scheme: initially, treatment with systemic drugs is carried out, and after ten days - with contact ones. After five days, the treatment with systemic fungicides is duplicated, and after another ten days, spraying with contact ones is carried out, and so on. By the way, Bravo is considered a rather effective contact drug.
