Trachelium (lat. Trachelium) Is a flowering plant belonging to the Bellflower family.

Description

Trachelium is a fairly large rhizome perennial, endowed with strong erect stems and reaching a height of thirty centimeters to half a meter. Slightly less common are specimens up to seventy-five centimeters, or even up to a meter high. The shoots of this plant branch very strongly near the bases, and the oblong or lanceolate leaves of the trachelium can have both dark green and lilac color, in addition, they all sharpen closer to the tips and are equipped with strongly serrated edges.

The flowers of the trachelium are collected in loose or dense five-lobed corymbose inflorescences, equipped with small bracts and having a hemispherical or almost flat shape. The corollas of these flowers are usually painted in pinkish, purple, lilac or bluish tones, however, sometimes you can see white corollas. And the long pistils of the trachelium flowers boast the presence of capitate stigmas. All flowers have a delicious delicate aroma that invariably attracts a huge number of butterflies.

The fruits of the trachelium are small pear-shaped or spherical capsules, generously filled inside with a truly incredible amount of shiny seeds.

Where grows

Most often, in natural conditions, trachelium can be found in the western Mediterranean - in Spain, Italy and North Africa. However, sometimes it can be seen in a number of other European regions.

Usage

Trachelium is actively grown as an ornamental plant - it is happily planted in rock gardens, greenhouses, greenhouses or indoors. However, it is no less popular in floristry - this plant is widely used to compose a wide variety of bouquets and flower arrangements. Trachelium goes especially well with roses and any other, no less noble flowers, capable of boasting slightly velvety or smooth petals, as well as with smooth leaves intended for creating contrasting arrangements. The trachelium also looks very cool in wedding bouquets - this plant surprisingly effectively sets off other flowers, thereby emphasizing their natural beauty!

But trachelium, unfortunately, cannot boast of high resistance in cutting - in order to revive it from time to time, it is briefly placed in very warm water, after cutting off the stems of the plant at an acute angle.

It has a trachelium and pronounced medicinal properties, which is why it is often included in the composition of mixtures and decoctions used for various diseases of the throat.

Growing and caring

Trachelium will grow best in fairly loose and well-drained, nutritious, slightly alkaline soils. As for placement in indoor conditions, this plant is usually installed on the southeast or southwest windows. If it grows on the northern side, which is characterized by a lack of lighting, its leaves will lose their decorative effect, and the flowering will become very poor.

In leaving, the trachelium is surprisingly unpretentious - it tolerates both intense heat and minor cold snaps equally well, moreover, if the thermometer does not drop below five degrees Celsius, it does not need shelter or insulation. That is, in fact, a trachelium planted in open ground only needs watering as needed, as well as periodic loosening of the soil and weeding. Also, due to the fact that the trachelium bushes are endowed with the ability to grow quite strongly, in the spring they are often divided and planted. And this plant is propagated either by seeds or by dividing the bushes.

As for diseases and pests, the trachelium is quite susceptible to a wide variety of fungal ailments, however, it encounters this scourge only in case of high humidity. Sometimes trachelium can be attacked by root rot, as well as by aphids or spider mites.
