Thick-walled (lat. Pachyphragma) - shade-tolerant and shade-loving perennial from the numerous cruciferous family.
Description
The thick-walled is a low-growing, beautifully flowering short-rhizome perennial (as a rule, its height does not exceed twenty to thirty centimeters), which looks like luxurious spherical bushes formed by basal wintering leaves and many tiny white flowers in openwork inflorescences. The serrated leaves of the thick-walled can boast of a fairly large size. All of them sit on very long petioles and are painted in bright green tones.
Regular four-membered small thick-walled flowers gather in short, flat brushes and boast a surprisingly pleasant aroma. Thick-walled bloom invariably occurs in the spring - it is quite abundant and almost always lasts more than a month. At the same time, the thick wall also gradually grows, forming incredibly spectacular curtains.
As for the fruits of the thick-walled, they have the form of pods compressed on the sides of the reverse heart shape with blunt and rather wide "wings" on each of the valves. The length of these pods reaches an average of twelve centimeters. And the septa of these fruits, consisting of two plates, are usually very thick. And each "nest" contains only one or two smooth brown seeds. It is noteworthy that the only species in this genus is the large-leaved thick-walled. And this is a very ancient species - it has been known since the beginning of the most ancient Tertiary period!
Where grows
The homeland of thick-walled are Turkey and the forests of the Caucasus. Moreover, this plant grows well up to 1700 meters above sea level.
Usage
Thick-walled is quite actively used in decorative floriculture. Most often it can be found in alpine slides and shady rockeries. This is an excellent groundcover! The thick-walled wall will look especially great in compositions with loosestrife, lamb, auga, ferns and hosts.
Growing and caring
It is recommended to plant a thick wall in areas with a fairly loose forest soil. This beauty will feel especially good under the canopy of trees. However, a thick-walled can be easily grown on absolutely any soils (it is very partial to clay or loamy soils), the main thing is that they are moderately moist and located in shady areas. In general, she is quite undemanding in leaving.
The thick-wall tolerates a short-term drought very well, but with very long dry periods, it will need systematic watering. The undoubted advantages of this plant are its cold resistance and shade tolerance.
Thick-walled propagates either by sowing freshly harvested seeds, or by dividing the bushes at the very end of summer. Purchased seed can be sown whenever you want, but it is best to do it before winter - the fact is that for the best germination of seeds requires proper cold stratification. And they should be sown in a moist and loose substrate prepared from compost with sand, to a depth of only three to four millimeters. And this plant is also endowed with the ability to form massive self-seeding!
As for pests, thick-walled leaves are very readily eaten by voracious leaf beetles almost every year, as a result of which their decorative effect decreases significantly. But this beauty is very resistant to various ailments.
