Hornwort (lat. Ceratophyllum) - plant for water bodies and coastal areas; perennial plant of the Hornifolia family. Hornwort is distributed all over the world: from the tropics to the Arctic Circle. Under natural conditions, there are about twenty species, but only one is used for landscaping summer cottages - submerged hornwort, or dark green hornwort.
Plant characteristic
Hornwort - plants with long, thin, branched stems in the upper part and slightly rising above the water surface. Leaves are sessile, hard, finely serrated, dark green, covered with hairs, dissected into filamentous lobes, whorled.
The flowers are small, barely noticeable, reach only 2-3 mm in diameter, collected in reduced inflorescences. Flowers are pollinated in the water column, which is extremely rare for flowering plants.
The fruit is a nutlet with thorny outgrowths. The seeds do not have endosperm and perisperm, they have a large embryo. All parts of the plant are covered with a film of a substance impermeable to gases and water - cutin.
Hornwort has no roots; they are replaced by shoots at the bottom of the stem. With the onset of autumn, most of the plant dies off, and the top sinks to the bottom. The maximum depth for hornwort is 9 m. Under favorable conditions, it grows rapidly, forms a large number of underwater thickets, thereby displacing other plants.
Growing conditions, reproduction and planting
Hornwort - a plant that prefers shaded areas, has a negative attitude towards illuminated places. It lives in slow flowing or stagnant waters. It is a frost-resistant plant, easily tolerates cold winters.
Hornwort is propagated by dividing shoots and cuttings only in warm spring and throughout the summer. Cuttings and cuttings do not need to be planted in special containers, they are simply thrown into the water. It is recommended to purchase planting material in garden nurseries and centers.
Car
Since the hornwort is unpretentious, it does not need special care. It is necessary to carefully monitor the plant, limiting the growth of new stems, otherwise the hornwort will fill the entire reservoir. Important: having settled a plant in a pond, it will be almost impossible to remove it later. Hornwort is resistant to diseases and pests, therefore it does not require preventive treatments.
Application
Hornwort is used for any country, natural and artificial reservoirs and streams. The plant forms very beautiful thickets that are able to purify water and enrich it with oxygen.

Hornwort Is A Useful Fluffy Handsome Man
Hornwort can be found anywhere in the world - both in the tropics and even in the Arctic Circle. Under favorable conditions, it grows so abundantly that the underwater thickets created by it quickly displace other plants. Hornwort is used mainly as an aquarium plant, but it can be easily settled in garden ponds. Slow flowing or stagnant bodies of water are the best habitat for such an attractive plant
