Serrano pepper (lat. Capsicum annuum Serrano) - one of the varieties of chili peppers.

Description

Serrano pepper is a plant that produces quite interesting bullet-shaped fruits. In this case, the size of each fruit usually does not exceed four centimeters. Initially, all peppers are covered with a shiny skin of a light green color, and as they ripen, the fruits acquire a characteristic bright red color.

The thin partitions located inside the peppers help to reduce their pungency, which in turn makes it possible to significantly expand the scope of their application. In order to get rid of the strong pungency, it is quite enough to remove the inner partitions and tiny seeds from the peppers.

The very first information about this in its own way unique pepper appeared in Mexico (in the mountainous regions). And it got its name in honor of the picturesque mountains called the Sierra. By the way, this pepper was very popular with such ancient tribes as the Aztecs, Mayans and Incas.

Where grows

At the moment, the largest serrano pepper plantations can be found in Latin America and a number of Asian countries.

Application

Serrano peppers can only be used raw if they are still green. Fully ripe and red-colored fruits are not suitable for this purpose - they are usually pickled, salted or added to various preservation. Such processing helps to make the fruits less pungent and more tender. And, nevertheless, they still continue to be quite spicy and very tasty.

Serrano pepper is used to prepare excellent sauces, including the famous "salsa". It is also often added to fish and meat dishes, as well as vegetables and stews. By the way, in addition to the coveted piquancy, these fancy peppers reward any dishes with a very specific crunch.

In addition, the fruit of the serrano pepper is often dried and, when ground, is used as an excellent spice. Such spices are especially popular in the cuisine of sultry Mexico.
