Petunia is very good both for decorating our flower beds and for decorating yards, because it grows beautifully on the ground, and in pots, and in hanging pots, while delighting with constant flowering almost to the very frost. But there is an opinion that it is not easy to grow seedlings of this beautiful flower on your own, since the seeds, and then the seedlings, are very capricious and demanding on the environment (microclimate)

Usually in the market and in specialized stores, petunia seedlings are sold in the spring and at the same time are not cheap, which is why many have to refuse to buy or take a few bushes. But you can grow a flower yourself. Even now, in the southern regions, it is possible to plant seedlings with seeds while it is not too hot.

Where to start?

In this article, I want to share my experience of growing petunias. First of all, I want to say about which pot it is desirable to plant the seeds in. Firstly, do not take a pot that is too low, since the soil should not be poured to the edge by about 5-6 cm. That is, the height of the pot should be about 20-30 cm. I plant in wide plastic eco-pots. I will tell you in detail about eco-pots in the next article.

Now we start preparing the ground. The soil should not be heavy and compacted, in addition, it should retain moisture well, so I make a mixture of ordinary earth, sand and peat. The proportions I take are as follows: 1/5 of sand, 2/5 of land and 2/5 of peat. The mixture turns out to be light, sufficiently saturated with nutrients and, due to the content of sand, retains moisture well. If you don't feel like messing around, then you can take the ready-made soil from the package.

I like the flower beds to be multi-colored, so I buy petunias of several varieties and different colors. Then, pouring a little seed from each bag, I form a mixture. Some will say that it is easier to buy a ready-made mixture, and it is a little cheaper. But in the finished mixture it is not known what colors and varieties, but here you can independently choose everything you need. With the preparation of the seeds finished. If you don't like mixing colors, then this preparation is not required.

Important: you do not need to pre-soak the seeds

Planting seeds

Then we go directly to planting seeds. Pour the soil into a flowerpot or pot so that it does not reach the edges by 5-7 cm, then we moisten it well. Important: the soil should be well moistened, but not "flooded". Now sprinkle the seeds neatly and evenly on the soil surface. Then we take cling film and cover the pot, stretching the film so that there are no gaps left for moisture to evaporate. Everything, with landing successfully finished.

Now we put the pot so that it appears in the sun only in the morning or in the evening, but not in the sun itself, otherwise the future seedlings will simply burn out.

All that remains for us after the completion of the main work is to monitor the state of our future flowers on a daily basis. This is done for several reasons. Firstly, in order to water on time if the soil dries up. For watering, you need to gently move the film aside, then carefully spray the ground with a spray bottle, then cover the pot with plastic again. Secondly, it is necessary to observe so that after the emergence of seedlings, and then, after the appearance of the first true leaves, remove the film from the pot or flowerpot and let the seedlings grow in the open air, periodically moistening the soil as needed.

Care

After the plants reach a height of about 4-5 cm, you need to dive them, that is, plant them less often, you can even immediately plant them in a place of "permanent deployment": on a flower bed, in flowerpots, in hanging pots, and so on. Now the main care is only timely watering. But if you wish, you can also feed with fertilizers for flowering plants.
