Why do you think cabbage has a hundred clothes? Maybe they say this not only because her head of cabbage is wrapped in dozens of dress leaves, but also because she belongs to the group of cold-resistant plants. Although cabbage is naturally more adapted to a mild, humid climate, seedlings are able to withstand short-term frosts down to –3 ° С. And the ripe head, dressed like a cabbage in an adult way, does not die in the garden when the thermometer drops to –8 ° С. Cabbage is one of the first sown in February for seedlings. Let's remember what conditions she needs to create in order to harvest a good harvest in the fall

Where to plant

Cabbage works well on loamy soils. If possible, take away medium-heavy areas, but will grow on light soils. It belongs to such plants that react well to manure introduced in the fall - cabbage is demanding on nitrogen.

Cucumbers and tomatoes, onions, carrots and peas will be the optimal precursors of cabbage in the beds. Never plant after corn or cabbage contaminated with keel. In the latter case, the place is quarantined for cabbage for at least three years.

How to plant

Cabbage should not be planted densely outdoors, especially using the nesting method. To form a large head of cabbage, this young lady needs space. So it is more convenient to water, and the neighbors will not shade each other.

How to fill the soil

The amount of fertilization depends on the quality and fertility of the soil. On average, for an area of 10 square meters. take:

• 30-50 kg of manure;

• 10-15 kg of slurry;

• 20-30 kg of humus;

• 20 kg of compost.

Manure and slurry should only be buried in the ground for main plowing. Humus, compost is introduced into the soil for spring digging. They also fertilize the site as a pre-sowing cultivation.

If it was not possible to fertilize the soil in advance, you can fill the holes with them right before planting. One will need a handful of compost and two matchboxes of ash. Before this, the beds must be watered abundantly.

In the future, the seedlings planted in open ground are fed once every one and a half weeks with a solution of a mullein (in proportions of 1:10) or bird droppings (1:15). For the first time, for one plant, the solution consumption is 0.5 liters, then this dose is increased to 1 liter. The pale color of the leaves will give a signal to add 15 g of urea to 10 liters of mullein.

More light

Cabbage is demanding on lighting. The plant loves light and when there is a lack of it, for example, in a dim greenhouse at a high temperature, the seedlings are strongly stretched. This reduces the quality of the planting material and negatively affects the future harvest. Therefore, it is so important to provide young plants with fully illuminated daylight hours.

In order not to be left without a head of cabbage

Before transplanting seedlings from a greenhouse, young plants need to be watered. Dig up seedlings with a clod of earth so as not to damage the delicate antennae of the roots. They are planted in the garden so that the depth is just up to the first true leaves. If you plant it smaller, then the cabbage will not take root. If you plant deeper, the apical bud may be covered with earth during care. Then there is a risk of damage, and the plant does not form a head of cabbage.

Pour, do not regret

Cabbage is a famous water bite! A large amount of moisture evaporates from the surface of the leaves - up to 7 liters of water from one plant per day. And when the heads of cabbage are tied (this process lasts about a month), the need for water increases more than usual. She may need 10 liters of fluid or more per day. This is not surprising, since the vegetable is 90% water. It is important that the entire soil layer, where the cabbage root system is located, is kept moist.
