A perennial herb is distinguished by its unpretentiousness to soils, resistance to low temperatures and annoying pests and diseases. The ease of caring for it attracts summer residents who prefer to lie in a hammock or sit with friends at a barbecue. Abundant and long-lasting flowering of at first glance rustic flowers, with the right selection of neighbors, creates an effective decorative composition

Rod Physostegia

Of the 15 species of herbaceous perennials of the genus Physostegia, only one is most often grown in culture.

Long-term physicalostegia is supported by the rhizome, which stores nutrients for future use. All other parts of the plant - an erect tetrahedral stem, narrow lanceolate leaves with a pointed end and a serrated edge, inflorescences-ears of funny light flowers and even roots - die every year to be reborn in a renewed form in spring.

Physostegia virginian

It was this species, called Physostegia virginiana (Latin, Physostegia virginiana), that took root in culture.

A tall plant grows up to 80 centimeters in height. The sturdy, erect stem with a square section is covered with lanceolate, dark green leaves, serrated at the edge and pointed at the end.

From late spring to autumn, white, pink, red flowers, collected in spike-shaped inflorescences, gradually bloom on the tops of the stems. The length of each flower reaches three centimeters. The irregular shape of the flower resembles a cross between snapdragon and foxglove flowers. The height of the inflorescences is up to 30 centimeters. While the flowers blooming alternately from bottom to top reach the top of the inflorescence, the seeds are already beginning to ripen in the lower part.

They like fresh, well-moistened, loose soil. When grown in fertile soil, do not overdo it with nitrogen fertilizers. Otherwise, physostegy will turn into an aggressor, spreading over the territory to the detriment of other plants. But you should not forget about mineral fertilizers, combining watering with top dressing every two to three weeks.

Watering during the active growing season requires abundant watering.

To make the bush more luxuriant in the spring, in the fall the aboveground part of the plant is cut to the very root.

They can be affected by fungi that cause root rot and the appearance of spots on the leaves. Rust is also dangerous.

Reproduction

It can be propagated by spring cuttings, but the easiest way is to divide the rhizome, which is carried out in autumn or spring.

When purchasing seedlings from horticultural centers, choose compact and healthy specimens.
