An unpretentious perennial plant whose flowers bloom in sunny weather. The fragility of flowers is made up for by their abundance. The fading ones are replaced by new ones, decorating the bushes throughout the summer season. The leaves of the plant are also decorative
Rod Heliantemum
All life on Earth rejoices at the sunrise. But even when it leaves for a short rest, the flowers of plants continue to bloom, animals prowl through the forests in search of food, people are on duty at the monitors of nuclear power plants. But there are plants that, at sunset, close their petals tightly as a sign of solidarity with the luminary.
So do perennial shrubs or annual herbaceous plants of the genus Helianthemum or Sunflower. Some species of the genus, having greeted the sun with the opening of flower petals, mournfully throw them to the ground with the setting of the luminary. True, such devotion to the sun is replenished in the morning with new flowers that have come to this world for just one day.
Numerous flowers facing the sun adorn the green carpet of leaves throughout the summer season. Gardeners grow numerous garden forms and bred hybrids with large, bright flowers.
Varieties
•
Alpine sunflower (Helianthemum alpestre) is a dwarf shrub 10 centimeters high, densely covering the ground with a green carpet of elliptical leaves sitting oppositely on the stem. Relatively large (2 cm in diameter) yellow flowers complement the picturesque coverage.
•
Dog heliantemum (Helianthemum canum) is a taller shrub that grows up to 30 centimeters high. Green leaves, covered with light fluff, turn to grayish. All summer long, yellow flowers bloom, forming cluster inflorescences.
•
Heliantemum monotonous (Helianthemum nummularium) - in the first two months of summer, a short shrub that grows to a height of 15 to 30 centimeters, forms living carpets of intense green leaves and numerous yellow flowers. Breeders have bred many varieties, simple or double flowers of which have departed from the traditional yellow color, dressed up in white, pink, crimson, bright orange, scarlet-red outfits. For example, a bright yellow heart, decorated with white-cream petals, in the flowers of the "Bird" variety. And the Ben Hope variety sports a bright orange heart, rimmed with rose-red petals.
•
Heliantemum thyme-leaved smooth (Helianthemum serpyllifolium glabrum) - some consider it a variety of Alpine Sunflower for its bright yellow flowers and dwarf growth. Brownish green leaves cover the soil with a dense living carpet.
Growing
Devoted sun worshipers need places that are accessible to its rays.
The plant tolerates different temperatures and hibernates in open ground without shelter. Although, when expecting a harsh winter, it is better to cover with foliage.
Heliantemum, unpretentious to soil, does not like stagnant water. He needs watering only with prolonged drought. On poor soils, it will gratefully respond to mineral fertilizing, which can be combined with watering once a month.
At the end of flowering, the shoots are pinched to stimulate new flowering, as well as to give the bushes a compact look.
Reproduction
Propagated by summer cuttings, choosing branches without flowers.
Usage
Heliantemum is an ideal plant for alpine slides with well-drained soil. Will be a good company for stonecrops, undersized phlox, perennial blue flax, and young.
It will become a decoration of a scree or slope, on which not every plant can take root.
From compact varieties, flower borders are arranged.
Heliantemum will complement and accentuate the beauty of other ornamental plants in the flower bed, with almost any color of flowers. These can be daisies and bells, forget-me-nots and red-leaved heuchera, rose bushes.
