Unpretentious Heliopsis is not afraid of severe Siberian frosts, because the energy of the sun lives in its "veins". A small curtain of fragrant suns on a green country lawn will keep a good mood even in cloudy weather, attract bees and bumblebees to the garden, and give long and abundant flowering

Rod Heliopsis

The genus of perennial herbaceous plants, Heliopsis, is 100 percent true to its name, which in Greek means "like the sun." For its external resemblance to another solar brother - the sunflower, it is also called "false sunflower".

Its miniature seed-seeds contain energy that preserves their germination for a long time, allowing the seedlings to grow powerful and hardy. Adult specimens pull their strong stems towards the sun, rising to a height of more than one and a half meters. Some Heliopsis species are very decorative and give the garden a sunny, abundant and long flowering in the summer.

Varieties

Heliopsis buphthalmoides (Heliopsis buphtalmoides) - a medium-sized annual plant does not have time to grow one and a half meters in height in one summer, being satisfied with 60-70 centimeters. An excellent representative for the middle ground of a mixborder. Its sun-yellow inflorescences and dark green lanceolate leaves will give the flower garden the joy of being.

Heliopsis sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides / Heliopsis laevis) is a perennial that grows to a height of 70 centimeters. The yellow flower caps are similar to sunflower caps in miniature (6 cm in diameter), reaching an intense yellow hue in some varieties of the species. Even the seeds are minicopies of black sunflower seeds. Large green leaves, ovate-lanceolate or ovoid.

Heliopsis rough (Heliopsis scabra) is a tall perennial with a powerful supply of energy that allows the branchy stem to grow up to one and a half meters in height. The surface of the sturdy stem and large leaves has a rough structure, which served as the basis for the name of the species.

Large yellow flowers, reaching a diameter of 8 centimeters, are simple in the botanical species, but for garden forms and varieties, breeders have bred double flowers. An example of double flowering is the Summer Sun variety, the flowers of which are as if drawn by the hand of a child who painted the petals in a sunny yellow color, and the center in greenish, creating a spectacular contrast in one flower. Cultivar (variety) "Orange King" is distinguished by bright orange flowers.

Some interesting varieties

"Golden ball" ("Golden Plume") - plants with this name can be found in other species. For example, at Rudbeckia. Their flowers are similar only at first glance, but, looking closely, there are differences. As for the leaves, you cannot confuse them. In Rudbeckia, the leaves are complex, deeply dissected (in the photo on the left), and in Heliopsis, the leaves are simple, ovoid, with a jagged edge (in the photo on the right). Growing

Heliopsis love the sun, but they also tolerate partial shade in hot summer. Frost and heat resistant.

The soil is preferred fertile and loose, without stagnant water. Watering is regular, especially during the hot season.

Perennials are propagated by dividing the bush in autumn or spring, immediately planting in a permanent place at a distance of half a meter from each other. When planting, a complete complex mineral fertilizer is added to the soil. It can grow in one place for many years, receiving mineral fertilizing in the spring.

It can be affected by powdery mildew, spider mites, and some insect larvae.

Usage

Heliopsis are frequent guests of village front gardens and country flower beds, which do not require close attention and care.

Perennial species are used to create borders, for the middle and background of mixborders.

The role of decorators for unsightly fences, compost heaps, outbuildings is also suitable for them.

Good for cutting.
