It is difficult to imagine the windows of a village house without beautiful pelargonium (geranium). Lush bushes, unpretentious to growing conditions, have firmly won the hearts of flower growers. In recent years, the popularity of this wonderful plant has been reviving. How to make friends with room culture?
Interesting facts of history
When studying plants, Karl Linnaeus attributed pelargonium and geranium to the same genus, therefore these names are often used as synonyms of one culture. After his death, biologists singled out pelargonium as a separate genus.
Grows wild in the hot climate of Africa, Asia Minor, Australia. Introduced into culture in the 16th century. The British brought seeds from the warm continent to their homeland. Breeders began to improve small inflorescences. As a result, specimens with terry, large "caps" of unusually beautiful colors were obtained. By the beginning of the 20th century, more than 1000 varieties and hybrids were bred in England.
The flower is called royal pelargonium thanks to Charles 1, the English king. An unpretentious plant helped the tallest person to overcome insomnia. Therefore, the valuable exhibit was awarded a high title.
In Europe, it is grown as a houseplant. Geranium came to Russia under Catherine the Great. In 1795, King George III of England sent several plants for greenhouse cultivation as a gift. In the early years, the flower spread exclusively among the aristocratic society. Much later, he appeared in the houses of ordinary peasants.
The word "pelargos" is translated from Greek as "stork", for the external similarity of the fruit with the beak of a beautiful bird. The flower is considered a talisman of the house against negative factors (quarrels, misfortunes, offenses). Helps children to better assimilate school knowledge, to get sick less, to be capricious.
Biological features
Perennial plant of semi-shrub or herbaceous form. Root tubers contain starchy substances. Depending on the type, the stems are: branched, straight, creeping. Leaves are presented in several variants: finger-dissected, finger-like, simple with slight pubescence. There are scent glands at the end of each hair. If you rub a leaf with your hands, then it begins to exude a pleasant smell.
Bisexual flowers are collected in umbellate inflorescences, several in each. They consist of 10 stamens accreted at the base, 5 petals of various colors and sizes.
The fruits are tied in a box supported by sepals. When ripe, they open from bottom to top. Seeds are small, dark brown. The shell is dense.
Better conditions
Loves well-lit places, fertile permeable soils. Plants easily tolerate dry periods, put up with a lack of moisture. With its excess, the root system rots. Heat-loving. It does not hibernate outside.
Landscape design
For flower beds near the house, zonal variants of pelargonium with rounded "caps" of inflorescences are suitable. Compact bushes look beautiful in solitary plantings. Selected contrasting shades will create a carpet or ornamental pattern. The ridges planted along the edge will emphasize the dignity of their neighbors.
Look original with cannes, petunia, lobelia, alissum, viola, cineraria, border dahlias, mimulus, Turkish carnation. Planted in pots, they will decorate terraces, balconies, house porch, gazebos. Resting places (swings, benches) are decorated with pots with bright pelargonium bushes.
A versatile flower that suits any style. Calm shades of geranium in flowerpots will perfectly fit into the landscape of Provence. The rounded shape of the "caps" will add completeness, elegance to mixed country flower beds. Pelargonium is indispensable in the classic design of clear lines, strict forms along with miniature roses, peonies, begonias, gladioli.
Bright geranium colors look organically against the background of a mowed, succulent lawn with small curtains.
Ivy-leaved, ampelous options are suitable for complex columns, pyramids. Planted in boxes of vertical structures, they form a solid green mass with open buds of various shades.
We will consider the reproduction of the beauty of pelargonium in the next article.
