Lily of the valley feels great in the shade of trees, welcoming the warmth of May with its elliptical leaves and silvery-white clusters-inflorescences. Indeed, only a single species is grown in culture - May lily of the valley, which has many forms and varieties. The aroma of lily of the valley works wonders with a person, making him more confident, more persistent, increasing his creativity and putting his thoughts in order

May lily of the valley

May lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) is a low-growing herbaceous perennial plant that rises 25 centimeters above the ground. This does not prevent him from being popular and loved by gardeners, spreading out in an extensive green carpet under the crowns of trees.

From the rhizome located underground, double wide-elliptical leaves appear, which can be confused with the leaves of tulips or wild garlic (called "flask" in Siberia). Only, unlike edible wild garlic leaves, lily of the valley leaves are not suitable for food.

Following the leaves, peduncles appear, curved at the top. They are just below the leaves, guarding the dormancy of racemose inflorescences, collected from small bell-shaped flowers of a silvery-white hue. The flowers exude a rather intense pleasant aroma.

Fragrant flowers are replaced by red-orange spherical berries, which, like leaves, cannot be eaten because of their toxicity. They stay on the peduncle for a long time, decorating the greenery of a living carpet.

Bred forms with double flowers, as well as with pale pink or pink flowers.

Growing

Due to their thin creeping rhizome, lilies of the valley spread very quickly over the area, forming extensive dense clumps in the shade of trees.

Lilies of the valley choose light loams rich in humus. Leafy humus, which forms naturally under trees, helps maintain a moderate soil moisture, which affects the favorable growth of the plant.

When planting, a gap of up to 10 cm is left between the plants, but if the planting is not periodically thinned out, the lilies of the valley grow in a dense curtain. Part of the rhizome when planting is placed close to the surface of the earth.

Lilies of the valley are also grown in pots, which are filled with a mixture of garden soil, leaf humus and sand, in a ratio of 2: 1: 1, adding rotted manure and mineral fertilizers.

Lily of the valley is very hygrophilous, and therefore requires regular and abundant watering. This is what the experts recommend. Once every 2-3 weeks, watering is combined with mineral feeding.

My lilies of the valley live well under a huge birch without any irrigation and fertilization, expanding their territory from year to year.

Lilies of the valley are resistant to frost, winter well in Siberia.

Reproduction of lilies of the valley

In central Russia, lilies of the valley gradually begin to turn yellow and dry up in June. This time is suitable for their reproduction by dividing the rhizome. The process can be divided into three sequential stages:

1.

Digging

2.

Division

3.

Landing

Digging

In order not to damage the rhizome and roots, for digging it is better to arm yourself with a pitchfork, rather than a shovel. From the edge of the curtain, they pry a plant with a pitchfork and pull out into the light of day a rhizome with superficial roots and buds.

Division

Having shaken off the earth from the dug plant, carefully divide it by hand or cut the light rhizome into separate plots with a sharp knife. Moreover, each piece must have roots and at least one bud. At the same time, do not forget about safety rules when working with gloves, because lilies of the valley are poisonous plants.

Landing

Large cuttings are planted in pre-prepared pits filled with mature compost. We put small pieces of rhizome with buds into a groove 10 centimeters deep, sprinkling them with compost.
