A powerful tree, Eucalyptus, loves to surprise the world by dressing the same plant with leaves of different structures, sizes and shapes. The first years of life of Eucalyptus are distinguished by very rapid growth in height. Having reached 25 meters by the age of ten, the tree slows down slightly and begins to increase the thickness of the trunk. The eucalyptus oil contained in the leaves has a complex composition and is actively used for medicinal purposes
Genus eucalyptus
Numerous genus
Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus) combines evergreen shrubs and trees that rise to the heavens to a height of 100 meters.
A characteristic feature of Eucalyptus trees is heterophyllia, which means “
variegation »On one representative of the genus. This phenomenon is inherent in other natural plants, for example, such as Mulberry, Arrowhead, Elderberry. It manifests itself in the fact that on one branch of a plant, leaves can simultaneously grow, differing from each other in size, shape or structure.
The decorative bark of the tree is also diverse, which can be scaly or smooth, folded, fibrous, with a beautiful color.
The leaves are interesting not only for heterophilia, but also for their location in space. They manage to hold on to a branch with a stalk in such a way that the sun's rays hit the edge of the leaf and freely reach the earth's surface. That is, Eucalyptus practically does not form a shadow.
Single bisexual flowers or inflorescences appear in the leaf axils. When the flower opens, the corolla and calyx of the flower fall off and numerous stamens on thin legs, painted in white, yellow or red, remain.
Varieties
* Ash eucalyptus (Eucalyptus cinerea) - Eucalyptus leaves are used not only by pharmacists and healers, but also by florists. Young leaves of this species have an ash-gray color, which gives a special charm to the composition of cut flowers.
* Darlimple's Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus darlympleana) - does not tend to large sizes, which makes the plant more resistant to low temperatures. It attracts attention with a variety of colors: the young bark is covered with picturesque spots, which disappear over the years, turning the trunk into snow-white; young leaves have a bronze tint and are ovoid; by old age, the leaves turn into drooping and dark brown-green. Newborn shoots are reddish.
* Figurative eucalyptus (Eucalyptus ficifolia) - the color and shape of the leaves changes over time. Green oblong young leaves with aging turn into dark green lanceolate leaves with a light central vein. The bark of the tree is relatively dark.
* Hun's Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus gunnii) is a cold-resistant species, whose silvery-blue young leaves are rounded. Over time, the leaves become lanceolate and sage green in color.
Growing
Pictured is a Eucalyptus plantation in Brazil:
Eucalyptus trees do not shade the soil, preferring sunny places. They develop poorly in the shade.
The soil they need is loose, deep, with good drainage, slightly acidic or neutral, but not too burdened with organic fertilizers.
There are species that can withstand temperatures down to minus 24 degrees, but basically, Eucalyptus are thermophilic plants, and therefore during our cold winters they are grown in large flowerpots. Fortunately, the tree tolerates shearing easily, and therefore you can restrain its irrepressible growth.
Thanks to the powerful root system, adults do not need watering. But, young and potted plants require watering.
Reproduction
Of course, you can buy ready-made seedlings with a clod of earth in nurseries, or you can grow Eucalyptus from seed, because the growth rate in the first years of the plant's life is simply fantastic. By the way, the seeds of Eucalyptus take much longer to ripen than for the development of a human child in the womb. More precisely, they need a whole year.
Enemies
Despite the unique composition of the oil contained in the leaves, Eucalyptus is susceptible to fungal diseases. In addition, he is attacked by copperheads and worms.

Dahlia Is Volatile
Of course, we are talking about the plant, which in Russia is called "Dahlia", and not about the speaker of the Israeli Knesset named Dalia Itzik. Although the life story of this wonderful woman, mother of three children, is worthy of attention. But we are not fond of politics, but prefer to be engaged in decorating the Earth by growing ornamental plants, berries and fruits, vegetables and herbs. This not only turns our place of residence into Paradise, but also provides an essential vitamin supplement to our diet
