Cucumber olive spot, or cladosporiosis, attacks cucumbers both in greenhouses and in the open. In conditions of high air humidity and low temperatures, this attack is especially harmful. Sharp daily temperature drops, drafts and irrigation by sprinkling with cold water also greatly contribute to its development. Typically, olive spot affects fruits and petioles with stalks. Of course, the fruits suffer the most, therefore, if this ailment is found on the site, you should immediately begin to fight it

A few words about the disease

Basically, olive spot appears on cucumber fruits, on which many specks are formed with an unpleasant bloom of olive-grayish shades. On such spots, rapidly solidifying droplets of a gelatinous consistency often appear. On fruits of impressive size, the spots often heal, while being covered with a delicate whitish skin. In most cases, as a result of the defeat of cladosporium, the fruits become unusable.

With the development of spots on the leaves of a cucumber, as well as on their stems, the plants become very fragile and quite often break, as their tissues dry out quickly and crumble strongly. On the petioles with stalks, small dry sores are formed with a bloom of the same olive-grayish hue as on the fruits. As a rule, this plaque contains a colony of conidiespores. And on delicate cucumber leaves specks of light brown color are formed, on which an olive bloom subsequently develops.

The cladosporium fungus that hibernates on the remains of vegetation is called Cladosporium cucumerinum Ellis & Arthur. It is not uncommon for olive spot to be seed borne.

Weakened crops that are unable to resist infections are especially attractive to the harmful fungus.

The development of the pathogen is significantly slowed down in hot and dry weather, so that the establishment of such is always beneficial to growing cucumbers.

How to fight

It is very important to eliminate all plant residues from the beds in a timely manner, since the fungus-causative agent of olive spot overwinters in them. If the pathogen is given the opportunity to successfully overwinter in plant residues, then next year the harmful disease will surely hit the cucumbers with renewed vigor. It is equally important to plant cucumbers in accordance with the rules of crop rotation, as well as systematically disinfect greenhouses with greenhouses.

When growing cucumbers, the air temperature should not be lower than seventeen degrees. It is better to plant them away from drafts, preferably in the sun, choosing the most resistant varieties for planting. And in order for the beds to have the opportunity to thoroughly ventilate, the crops should in no case be thickened.

Cucumbers are watered only with warm water, and only under the roots, and not from above. In greenhouses, it is better to water them in the early morning, so that when cool nights are established, the room is dry. And cucumbers growing in open ground, on the contrary, must be watered with the onset of dusk, so that the bright sun through the water droplets cannot burn the plants. In cold weather, all watering is reduced to a minimum. If you suddenly begin to show symptoms of olive spot, you need to try to reduce the humidity to 80 - 85%.

Heavily affected cucumber leaves must be removed, and when harvesting, it is important to have time to collect the fruits in time.

Affected crops are recommended to be sprayed with 1% Bordeaux mixture. Usually, several treatments are carried out, observing an interval of seven to ten days. Can be used for spraying and copper oxychloride, as well as drugs "Kartotsid" and "Abiga-Peak". Spray cucumber plantings only from a sprayer - a watering can and a whisk will not work in this case. And the weather for this procedure must be warm.
