Today it is already difficult to imagine a New Year's holiday without a New Year tree. But many deliberately refuse to decorate their home with a New Year's beauty, so as not to chop down a living tree. However, if you plant conifers on your site, then you can create a New Year's atmosphere at your dacha. Or if you make sure that a tubular ornamental plant grows in the house. And such an evergreen pet will decorate an interior or a personal plot all year round, regardless of the season. What plant to choose so that it is decorative and does not require complex care?

What conifers to choose for the site

Of course, it is undesirable to use blue spruce or cypress for these purposes. First of all, they will grow for a long time. And they will take up a lot of space in the future.

It's about compact specimens. Moreover, if you live in a region with cold winters and severe frosts, you should choose such conifers that would require a minimum of care and would be resistant to cold weather.

Among these plants, it is worth highlighting:

• dwarf pine;

• juniper;

• undersized thuja.

When choosing a pine, you need to make sure it is a dwarf species. Then the plant will not be stretched out by a large tree, but will grow into a neat compact bush. If in doubt, when buying a plant, pay attention to the growth - in dwarf species, it is short.

Among junipers, choose medium or scaly. They also grow near the ground, are not damaged by frost and do not fade in the sun. Loose and moisture-consuming buds are suitable for them. But on a damp site, it is undesirable to choose creeping forms.

And from the varieties of thuja for the garden, they choose the western one. But here, too, you need to pay attention to the variety, so as not to be mistaken with the shape and size. For example, thuja western Golden Globe is a short shrub that takes a spherical shape. And thuja Smaragd resembles a low cypress in its shape, and may well play the role of a New Year tree.

Propagation of conifers by cuttings

Seedlings of coniferous plants are planted in open ground from containers in spring or autumn. But in the winter, you can harvest and prepare cuttings for propagation.

For the reproduction of thuja, juniper cuttings from the plant, cut off the shoot with the heel. That is, with a piece of wood from last year. To disinfect cuttings from pathogenic fungi, it is recommended to soak them for a few minutes in a solution of foundationol before rooting.

The needles are cut from the lower part of the cutting so that the cutting can be buried in the ground for rooting. You need to immerse it in the ground to a depth of about 2 cm. You can also shorten the needles a little, which will remain on the handle. But don't cut it off completely.

The soil mixture for rooting should be loose, breathable, and at the same time, it needs to retain moisture well. For such purposes, a mixture of peat with vermiculite or perlite is suitable. Peat will quickly dry out and be saturated with air, and perlite will release the accumulated moisture as needed.

To make the rooting process more successful, it will be useful to process the slices with a root formation stimulator. After deepening the lower tip of the cutting into a pot or glass with soil, you need to water the containers and cover them with transparent bags or cut-off plastic bottles. Pots or containers with cuttings are left in a warm, bright place, but not in direct sunlight. From time to time they need to be ventilated.

Planting a seedling in open ground

The planting of seedlings grown from cuttings is started in spring or autumn. The planting hole is made with a volume of approximately one bucket. It needs to be filled with a loose nutrient mixture. For example, a "cocktail" of garden soil, peat and coniferous litter from the nearest forest or planting.

Before planting, the land needs to be well watered. And try to gently straighten the roots of the seedling taken out of the container. It is not necessary to bury the seedling in the ground, the root collar should be at the level of the soil.
