Who doesn't love to feast on a delicious aromatic berry? There are probably not very many of them. Therefore, every spring we look forward to the ripening time of sweet aromatic berries. But sometimes an unpleasant surprise awaits us: the strawberry begins to ache, the berries deteriorate, the harvest disappears. In this article I want to talk about the most common diseases of strawberries and how to treat your favorite bushes
Powdery mildew
Yes, yes, it affects not only cucumbers. This disease can completely destroy strawberries, along with their harvest. Most often, this disease manifests itself after mid-May. But you should start carefully examining the leaves for powdery mildew disease after about the 10th, be sure to raise them and look at the back side, since a whitish bloom appears first of all there. The edges of the leaves gradually begin to wrinkle, and the leaves themselves bend in the opposite direction so that their lower part becomes visible. The leaf plate is compacted, it becomes not green, but bronze. Then the berries are affected, both ripening and still completely green. The fruits stop growing, then dry up.
What to do?
In the spring, as soon as leaves appear, spray the plants with a 1% colloidal sulfur solution. Then the operation will need to be repeated several more times: on the eve of flowering, immediately after harvest and 2 more times during the summer with an interval of 14-15 days.
Verticillary wilting
An extremely unpleasant disease, since drugs cannot cope with it. Appears in the warm season, from late May to late September. Most often during the period of budding, flowering and harvesting. The causative agent of this disease is in the soil (by the way, it is extremely living and persists in the soil for more than ten years!) And enters the plant through its roots. Then it fills the roots completely, which completely stops the growth of the strawberry bush. Gradually, the old (extreme) leaves fall to the ground, change their color to brown. The leaves in the center become small, yellow and opaque. And gradually the plant dies.
How to fight?
Diseased plants and all the sockets allocated from them (including dug ones) must be dug up and completely destroyed. Why and dedicated sockets? Because the disease is transmitted not only through the soil, but also from the mother plant to the “baby”. You cannot plant new healthy strawberry bushes in the vacant space, otherwise they will get sick again. Try to move the garden to a different location and plant new plants there. Never move plants from an infected garden bed!
It is best to place a new bed where carrots, onions, garlic grew. By the way, onions and garlic can be planted together with strawberries in the same garden.
White spot
This disease affects all parts of the plant: leaves, tendrils, flowers, and berries. First, brown leaves of a rounded shape appear on parts of the plant. Gradually they turn white in the center, a white spot with a brown or dark red border is obtained.
What to do?
After collecting strawberries, completely mow all the leaves and destroy them, it is best to burn or take to a landfill. In no case do not put them in the compost pit, since it is on the leaves that the "instigator" of the disease hibernates, and, accordingly, after overwintering in the compost pit, in the spring it will disperse throughout the entire plot along with the compost.
To prevent the appearance of this disease, you can spray the bushes with a 1% solution of Bordeaux liquid during the period as soon as the first leaves appear, then during the appearance of buds, after you have collected the entire crop, then a couple more times at intervals of 2-2, 5 weeks.
