Some interesting things about Sosnovsky's hogweed
The most favorite place where hogweed grows is where the density of the grass cover is disturbed: in places where the grass has been trampled by animals (horses, cows, etc.), where there is a lot of manure. This is easily explained by the fact that for the growth and development of hogweed, anaerobic bacteria are needed, including cyanobacteria, which are in excess in manure (and in other places where there is little oxygen). And here we get a very interesting process: the more hogweed, the less oxygen in the soil, we eat less oxygen, the more anaerobic bacteria needed for the growth of weeds.
Another interesting fact is that the hogweed grows until it gives seeds. Even if you constantly mow it, the plant will grow again from the root and this process will not stop until the seeds are ripe. And hogweed seeds give a lot: up to 35 thousand and their germination rate is up to 90%! And the seeds have tremendous vitality, they can lie in the ground for a decade and a half until ideal conditions for growth appear.
In addition, in order to conquer as much living space as possible, the hogweed "learned" to release substances into the soil that destroy other plants. Therefore, not a single plant can withstand such a neighborhood and dies.
Despite all its danger, and from such a harmful plant as the Hogweed, there is benefit. On its basis, drugs have been created that help with many diseases, including salmonellosis and psoriasis. Hogweed has antiseptic, analgesic, anticonvulsant, sedative and antispasmodic effects.
How to defeat Sosnovsky's hogweed?
1. Mulching with a thick black film. This operation is carried out at any time, after mowing the plant (remember that all work with the cow parsnip must be done in protective clothing, gloves and always in a respirator!). The mown plant is removed, and a black film is laid over the entire area, pressing it tightly to the soil surface with stones, bricks or other weighting agents. Leave until next year. The next year, the site is plowed and again covered with foil or planted with a crop that requires frequent and regular loosening of the soil to allow oxygen to enter it.
Geotextile is not an assistant in the fight, however, there is an opinion that it can be used if a five to seven centimeter layer of sand or earth is poured on top. But it's better not to risk it
2. Treatment with chemicals. Also carried out in protective clothing and a respirator! Any herbicide is taken for treatment, but the most commonly used one is roundup, and with the help of a whitewash brush, a broom, a special sprayer, the area with the hogweed is treated. Several treatments will be required per season. Sometimes this does not help and you have to "inject" the herbicide into the trunk of the cow parsnip. To do this, the syringe is filled with herbicide, the barrel is pierced and the herbicide is injected into it. You can combine spraying and injections: spray once, next time introduce roundup into the plant.
3. Mowing and subsequent plowing of the area inhabited by hogweed also gives results. But you will have to plow and discard the site more than once, and then it is advisable to plant perennial grasses on this place for a while. Attention! It is impossible to mow the hogweed with a trimmer or brushcutter!
What will not give results in the fight against hogweed?
If you want to cleanse the area of this plant, then you should not apply the following measures.
1. Mowing. It would seem that he cut the weed and enjoy life. But no. The hogweed begins to grow again from the root. And it will germinate until it gives seeds.
2. Mulching with organic materials and black non-woven fabric. This powerful plant will easily overcome such an obstacle.
3. Uprooting or partial destruction of the root of Sosnovsky hogweed.
