With the appearance of the first zucchini on the table, we can safely say that the real summer has come. Today it is difficult to believe that once only the seeds of fruits were eaten, and the vegetable itself, which came to us from hot Mexico, was still a wonder for us a few centuries ago. Nowadays, you rarely find a garden in which the hostesses do not grow zucchini. And what could be simpler when they prefer a reckless method of reproduction - I planted a seed in the garden, and it turned into a gorgeous whip with such healthy and nutritious vegetables
Site selection and soil preparation
Zucchini is considered an unpretentious plant, but it also has its own preferences, which should be taken into account by those who expect to collect a generous harvest from the beds. And above all it concerns where to choose a place for him in the sun.
For the beds, the best place would be a sunny, windless area. It is necessary to make it a rule not to grow zucchini, like other pumpkin seeds, from year to year in one place. According to the crop rotation regulations, an interval of three years must be observed between such plantings. Zucchini are planted after potatoes, cabbage, radishes, beets, peas.
For zucchini, the best soil composition will be light loam and sandy loam soils. The land must be highly fertile. It is recommended to fill the site with manure. It is imperative to add humus and compost to peat soils. Useful for 1 sq. M. add 1 tablespoon of ash and 1 teaspoon of superphosphate to the beds. Before planting, it will not hurt to water the beds with liquid fertilizers in a warm form.
Heavy clay soils need to add 2-3 kg of peat per 1 square meter, sawdust with humus, as well as wood ash and superphosphate. The introduction of sod land, sawdust with humus and peat will help to improve the composition of the sandy soil.
Preparing seeds for planting
When planting seeds directly into the ground, it is very important that the seedlings are friendly and uniform. 2-3 seeds will be placed in the hole, and it is desirable that the seed grows at the same time, since the extra, weakest plants need to be removed. And since time flies by in the garden and every minute counts, the work will progress much more efficiently if you do it in one go. Therefore, the seeds must be processed and germinated before planting.
You need to prepare for sowing a month before this date. During this time, the seeds must be warmed up and treated with disinfectants. It is not forbidden to plant dry seeds, but germination is a simple process. For this, the seeds are placed in a humid environment.
Planting seeds in the ground
Disembarkation dates depend on weather conditions. As a rule, this time falls on May-June. The beds are arranged with a width of 50-60 cm. They need to be dug up by mixing the earth with organic fertilizers. The seed holes are made at a distance of about 1 m. The zucchini produce long lashes, which should be spacious in the garden. A handful of ash and humus is placed in each hole. It is better to plan the planting of seeds in the morning hours or in gloomy weather. A couple of seeds are hidden in the ground to a depth of about 5 cm. If the soil is light - a little deeper, and on heavy ones - closer to the surface.
Wind and weather protection
If the weather in your region is windy, as it happens in the steppe zone, and there are no buildings near the garden to plant zucchini from the leeward side, you need to arrange a low wind barrier. Very young seedlings can be protected with plastic bottles with cut-off bottoms. Thus, by the way, it is easy to designate the places of planting seeds. In addition, they will serve as additional protection in the event of a sudden cold snap or summer hail. When the zucchini grows up, they will need space, and the fences of the beds with plywood, slate, and hammered boards will become an obstacle against gusts of wind.
