Now on sale you can find original packages that are designed for growing seedlings. Of course, it is not difficult to adapt other plastic products to these needs, which usually go to the trash, but in the skillful hands of summer residents they always find useful use. How to turn packages from cereals, milk and other products into unusual pots for seedlings and what features of cultivation should a gardener know about?
How to create a pot from a bag?
The main requirements for your bags are that they are strong and of sufficient volume, at least 1 liter. It is better if they are narrow and long. Thin plastic products can be strengthened by using 2-3 pieces at once, putting one into the other.
If your improvised materials turned out to be full of holes, it doesn't matter. On the bottoms of such plastic "pots" you still need to make holes for drainage. And the packages should be provided with pallets where excess water will drain after watering.
Such bags can be used both for sowing seeds and for transplanting senets into them at the age of 2, 5-3 weeks. When it is planned to grow seedlings without picking, only a few seeds are sown in one package. To do this, a layer of nutritious soil mixture with a height of about 5 cm is laid on the bottom. It is impossible to cut the bag to the required height, because we still need these sides. To make it easier to work, the edges are folded down with a roll. When seeding is complete, this container can be placed in a larger bag, or unfolded with a seed bag and tied with a knot on top to create a greenhouse environment, and then sent to a warm place for germination.
When the seedlings appear, the bags are placed in a well-lit place, and they are also provided with supplementary lighting with electric lamps. Only the strongest seedlings are left in this container, while others - less developed, elongated - are planted in other containers. Ground bags are also suitable for this. In addition to the free container for planting seedlings, they are also very convenient in that they perfectly reanimate sprouts stretched out from a lack of light. In such improvised pots, it is very easy to adjust the planting height and, if necessary, add earth, because this pot can become higher and higher due to the polyethylene length previously twisted to the required height.
Technique for planting elongated seedlings
The success of growing does not always depend on the gardener, and sometimes for objective reasons - lack of light, especially the variety - by the time the seedlings are planted in the greenhouse, it still turns out to be elongated. In this case, it may be impossible to deepen the plant when planting, as it would be in indoor conditions. Very often the ground at great depths still remains cold, and the tomato is a rather thermophilic plant.
A tricky way to get around this trouble is to plant the tomatoes at an angle or even by laying the elongated stem horizontally in the hole. To do this, the hole is not dug vertically into the depth, but horizontally, across the bed. In the place where the earthen lump will be located, the hole is made deeper.
Before transplanting seedlings, the hole is well watered and waiting for the earth under the seedlings to absorb moisture. Then add plant humus, well-decomposed compost. After that, the seedlings are placed in a hole like in a cradle. The stem, which will hide under a layer of earth, is cleaned of leaves. They are cut with scissors or pruning shears. If you simply cut it off, you can damage the tissue of the seedling stem.
The hole is covered with humus and a peg is placed at the point where the top of the tomato leaves the garden. It is not immediately recommended to tie up the seedlings so as not to break the stem. After a few days, the tip itself will begin to rise towards the light. Then you can tie a string to it.
