In the winter months, when many indoor plants leave for a dormant period, evergreens become a lifesaver for decorative interior decoration. And one of the most prominent representatives of this group is the noble laurel. The plant is beneficial not only because it continues to pamper with its majestic beauty even on frosty days, but also because of its unpretentiousness in caring for it
What is remarkable about the plant
The perennial belongs to the laurel family and is a native of southern Europe. In its natural habitat, this handsome man reaches a height of over 15 m. But in indoor conditions, the plant will not master such a mark, especially since caring for it involves pruning.
As an indoor culture, laurel is grown in the form of a tree or shrub. Its decorative value is primarily represented by its leathery elongated leaves of a dark green hue. They are not only beautiful in appearance, but also interesting in that they exude a specific spicy aroma. It is not surprising that in ancient times wreaths of these leaves adorned the heads of prominent figures of culture and history.
Under indoor conditions, laurel can bloom. But its flowers have small petals and do not carry a special decorative load.
Features of the content of laurel
It is tempting to buy a large, mature plant for interior decoration. But it should be borne in mind that it will be difficult for such flowers, especially those grown in greenhouses with a specially seasoned microclimate, to adapt to the new conditions in the apartment. First of all, this applies to warm dwellings, in which, moreover, an increased dryness of the air is observed in winter.
On the contrary, young plants are better assimilated in new living conditions, they get sick less and they have more chances to please the owners with their original presence for a long time.
In winter, the laurel is given a place by the cool windows. Young specimens are even left on glazed balconies or pots are installed between window frames. It doesn't matter if it turned out to be a little sunny side of the house - the plant is undemanding to lighting.
Laurel care
In the summer months, the laurel pot can be taken outside. A place for a plant is sought in partial shade. Watering is carried out every day, this procedure is planned for the evening. In hot weather, water it twice a day.
It is also recommended to spray the leaves. It has been noticed that if you ignore this moment, the flower will more often attack the scabbard. Another dangerous parasite for perennials is aphids. In the fight against it, such a folk remedy as processing a plant with tobacco broth with the addition of soap is effective. But when spraying with this composition, it is necessary to protect the soil from drops of solution falling into it. To do this, you can cover the pot with plastic or set it at an angle.
To keep the size of the flower under control, pruning it twice a year. Formative pruning begins in the second decade of August. At this time, the growth of the flower is inhibited, and the remaining eyes will have time to mature before winter. With the arrival of spring, the apical ocelli should be removed. They are the strongest, and the remaining ones have little effect on the growth of laurel.
Transplant and reproduction
There are several ways of plant propagation: seed, cuttings, transplantation of root suckers. The best time for sowing seeds is early spring. For this, a substrate is made up of:
• deciduous land - 4 parts;
• turf land - 2 parts;
• sand - 1 part.
Planting material for cuttings is cut from April to June. For this purpose, non-lignified shoots are chosen, on which a pair of internodes are left. Rooting is carried out in a pot of moistened sand, covered with a glass jar.
Root offspring for reproduction are stored when transplanting laurel. It is held every three years. To do this, you need the following soil mixture:
• sod land - 4 parts;
• deciduous land - 2 parts;
• sand - 1 part.
