White rot is especially ruthless when storing tomatoes. A sharp manifestation of this dangerous ailment can also be observed if during the period of planting tomato seedlings in greenhouses there is high humidity (about 95%) in combination with an air temperature of twelve to fifteen degrees. With increasing humidity, the likelihood of tomato infection increases significantly. However, the manifestation of white rot is usually focal in nature, therefore, this attack does not lead to one hundred percent crop losses

A few words about the disease

All the aboveground organs of a tomato, attacked by an unfortunate misfortune, become covered with putrid wet spots. In almost all cases, the formation of white rot occurs in places of mechanical damage. And if there are tears in the tissues of the harvested fruits, then the probability of damage to tomatoes is almost one hundred percent.

The tops of tomatoes affected by white rot begin to fade slowly, and the lower parts of the stems begin to rot. As for the root parts of the stems, they usually soften, and sometimes they are still covered with a flocculent white bloom. On stem sections, black fungal sclerotia of rather large sizes can often be seen. However, sometimes they can appear on the surfaces of the stems.

Infected lower leaves are watery, discolored and, in some cases, covered with a white bloom. And the growing fruits attacked by white rot noticeably soften. Moreover, their skin almost always cracks and becomes covered with an extremely unpleasant cotton-like mycelium.

The causative agent of tomato white rot is a pathogenic fungus called Sclerotinia libertiana Fuckce, and compost and soil act as the primary source of infection. Fungal sclerotia found in the soil are especially dangerous. Since fungal spores are easily carried by the wind, they can often attack indoor plants exposed to fresh air. So, if prolonged wet weather sets in in summer, it is better to move indoor pets back to the room.

To a large extent, the development of a harmful disease is facilitated by high humidity and sharp temperature drops. Excessive thickening of tomato plantings is another factor favorable for the development of adversity.

How to fight

When growing tomatoes, you must strictly follow the rules of crop rotation. And the soil intended for planting them should be systematically steamed - the main protective measure against white rot is precisely the high-quality disinfection of the soil. It is important to promptly remove infected plants from the sites, and in case of especially severe lesions, diseased tissues must be removed with the capture of a part of healthy ones.

Another important preventive measure is to maintain optimal air humidity and temperature in greenhouses. And all post-harvest residues must be eliminated without fail. This is important because bacteria, viruses and fungi often hibernate in plant debris. If they are not removed in a timely manner, the next year the disease on the site will surely repeat itself.

Foliar feeding of growing tomatoes will also serve well. To prepare a composition for carrying out such dressings, 10 g of urea, 2 g of copper sulfate and 1 g of zinc sulfate are diluted in ten liters of water. Such dressings not only prevent white rot infestation of tomatoes, but also perfectly strengthen them.

If the white rot on the tomatoes nevertheless manifested itself, the growing crops begin to be sprayed with "Fitosporin". Such drugs as "Euparen multi" and "Rovral" also help well. You should not give up copper-containing products of combined or contact action, among which we can mention the drugs "Abiga-Peak", "Hom", "Oxyhom", as well as copper sulfate and Bordeaux mixture. Also, the affected areas are often treated with the so-called pink paste, which is a combination of potassium permanganate, chalk and water.
