A summer cottage, most of which consists of wet clay, often leads summer residents to the most real despair, because you really want to plant fruit trees and beautiful shrubs, break a pretty flower garden and grow an excellent harvest of vegetables! However, there is nothing unreal in this, the main thing is to understand what exactly can grow on such a site
It's not that bad
Of course, clay soil is considered one of the most problematic - from year to year it invariably baffles novice summer residents. Nevertheless, this is far from the worst option of all possible - there are many flowers, as well as various ornamental shrubs and fruit trees that easily put up with clay soil and thrive on it. And in some areas it is quite possible to try to improve the quality of the soil. Of course, it is almost impossible to completely and completely improve it, but the results that can actually be achieved can also be very pleasing.
Improving soil quality
First, you need to conduct a thorough analysis of the soil and build at least the simplest drainage to drain excess water. Then, drainage material is laid on the bottoms of the holes intended for planting various shrubs with trees, and a small amount of river sand or fires is added to the upper soil layer (this is the so-called waste from flax factories). And in order to deoxidize the soils, dolomite flour is introduced into them, after which they are fertilized with thoroughly decomposed manure. This soil is ideal for a compact lawn, a bright flower garden or practical vegetable beds. And the areas of the garden that have not been significantly improved are best set aside for planting the most unpretentious crops.
What will grow well on wet clay?
On wet clay soils, you can safely break a cherry or apple orchard, as well as plant all kinds and varieties of irgi, willow and mountain ash, as well as linden with maple. You can also grow shrubs on these soils - the most spectacular varieties of viburnum or deren will come in handy here. For example, the Diavolo viburnum bush, painted in rich burgundy-brownish tones, perfectly helps to emphasize the lightest areas. And if you need to lighten the dark corners, you can plant an Elegantissim grass - its luxurious whitish-greenish leaves will be the best helpers in this important matter!
The currant also feels great on clay soils, and not only its cultivated varieties, but also an extremely attractive beautiful currant. Aralia or holly mahonia take root in such areas just as well. It is not forbidden to plant conifers in clay - cypress develops best in it. At the same time, it is important to provide all tree crops with good drainage in the planting holes, as well as thoroughly mulch the tree trunks in order to avoid extremely undesirable soil compaction.
In addition, a wide variety of ferns grow well in clay areas. And on them you can safely grow astilbe, daylily, most varieties of primrose and hellebore, as well as eastern doronicum and irises - airavid and Siberian.
And if suddenly on a clay area it was not possible to break the usual lawn, you can simply plant moisture-loving low-growing plants on it. A small clover copes very well with excessive moisture in such an area. It's just important not to forget to sand the soil in the spring and periodically pierce the spectacular green lawn with a pitchfork!
