Why tomatoes grow hard

Tomatoes with a white and hard center can grow in greenhouses and outdoors. Consider the causes of the appearance of white, hard veins in the pulp of tomatoes, methods of control and prevention

Why tomatoes have a hard center

An undesirable phenomenon in the form of a whitish core and tough fibers can appear in tomatoes. The problem appears in three cases.

Reason 1. Features of the variety

The genetics of some hybrids is conducive to the appearance of white veins. This ensures the stability and transportability of the harvested crop. The veins serve as a kind of framework for maintaining the fruit pulp. Often a similar effect is found in commercial budget tomatoes grown for sale.

Reason 2. Phytoplasmosis

Phytoplasmosis is a typical disease of nightshades. Most often, the virus infects tomatoes, this affects the condition of the leaves (small, the tips curl, become gray-pink). A diseased plant has fruits with an uneven color inside and out.

Reason 3. Food, weather conditions

At low humidity and high temperatures, the fruits are deprived of the pigment substance lycopene, the pulp of the fruits does not turn red, remains light and tasteless.

Also, as a result of heat, nutritional imbalances can occur. At a temperature of more than +30, the plant is not able to assimilate potassium, its level “in the plant's body” falls. Lack of potassium affects the condition of the fetus. A bush deprived of strength is not able to give a high-quality harvest, it ripens by half. Tomatoes often have a harsh whiteness on the inside and hard veins.

Excessive heat or sudden cold snaps may increase the amount of nitrogen. This fact increases the likelihood of bacterial infections, the growth of vegetative mass increases, tomatoes are poorly tied, and their quality decreases. Similar problems arise when there is a lack of lighting.

Fighting and preventing the appearance of white veins

Timely actions will help to improve the quality of tomatoes, get rid of the appearance of a tough and whitish core.

Weather

In the heat, try to lower the temperature in the greenhouse: ventilate, do not skip watering. To increase humidity, leave containers with water on the beds.

Food

The lack of potassium is eliminated by applying any potassium fertilizer (sulfate, potassium nitrite). Foliage shows signs of potassium starvation. It has an uneven color, the leaves of the lower tier have curling at the edges, a change in color, similar to a burn. Feed with an ash solution: 10 l + 6 tbsp. ash, leave to infuse for a day.

With an excess of nitrogen, the stems thicken, the leaves become dark green, immunity decreases, fruiting is delayed, tomatoes do not fully ripen. In many varieties, the problem appears in the form of curling leaves and the appearance of spots (transparent, yellow). The harvested crop has a high content of nitrates.

The nitrogen content can be reduced by washing out. Water frequently (every 3-4 days). The same decomposition of nitrogen occurs when watering with a solution of urea (2 tbsp. L. + 10 l of water). This interaction converts nitrogen into a gaseous form, and it is eroded.

The amount of nitrogen decreases with the introduction of wood ash and micronutrient fertilizers, which include copper, molybdenum, magnesium. Feeding with potassium sulfate works well in this situation. In the upper layer, nitrogen will decrease when mulching with fresh sawdust.

Overdrying helps to neutralize the effect of nitrogen, to limit the build-up of green mass. Signs of fattening will disappear when watering is limited. Overdry the soil by skipping 1-2 waterings. Stress like this is good for tying. So that there is no dumping of the buds, spraying with the preparation "Ovary" or a solution of boric acid is carried out.

Phytoplasmosis

It is impossible to fight the virus, the affected bushes must be destroyed. Prevention helps prevent the problem. Pest control will help from the appearance of phytoplasmosis. Aphids, scoops, cicadas, whiteflies are active carriers of the virus.

Once every 3-4 weeks, sprinkle / water the tomatoes with garlic infusion. For 10 liters of water, 2-3 heads of chopped garlic are used. The solution is left in a warm place for 3 days, then a garden with tomatoes is treated with it. After watering the land must be loosened.

Features of the variety

Some tomato hybrids have a hard flesh with whitish veins. When using such varieties, to reduce the unpleasant phenomenon, place the tomatoes for ripening in a container with ripe fruits. Buy seeds from proven varieties.
