Small plots oblige to use the territory economically. Trellis allow you to grow vegetables more compactly. These attachments are great for indeterminate tomato varieties and cucumber lashes. We offer some interesting ideas for greenhouses and options for open ground
Advantages of trellis growing
Any trellis allows you to increase the yield, save space in the greenhouse and the number of beds on the street, this is especially true for cucumbers. The garter of plants contributes to an even flow of light and the development of standard, beautiful fruits, makes them easy to harvest. In an elevated state, air circulation improves, the development of certain diseases (powdery mildew, late blight) is prevented.
Trellis for vegetables in the open field
Each outdoor version for vegetable plants is created on the basis of a frame. The main requirements for such a structure are strength, convenience and reliability. The structure must hold not only the mass of the shoots, but also the load arising from the formation of fruits.
The material is chosen according to your preferences: metal, timber, PVC pipes. The main method of fastening, eliminating skewing and blocking, is deepening and the correct number of guide pegs. The parameters depend on the length of the bed and the varietal characteristics of the plants. If the height is 2-2.5 m, then the depth should be 0.5-0.8 m. The supporting pegs are made in increments of 2 m. The edge stakes are always thicker than the intermediate ones.
The stationary support has connections with horizontal strips, to which a trellis net or other devices for supporting the shoots will be attached in the future. The bottom rail is installed close to the ground 20 cm.
Frameworks are made in different ways: in the form of a curbstone, a rectangle, a tent. There are foldable and portable options. To save material, one-sided supports are arranged at an angle with a single horizontal bar. This is convenient if the plantings are adjacent to the outbuildings, the walls of the greenhouse. To fix the mesh from below, use low pegs with a bar.
Trellis construction
Fast installation with minimal investment - this is the fastening of the shoots to the trellis net. The best option would be to use ready-made mesh and PVC, intended for gardening. It is strong enough, resistant to moisture and the sun, holds its shape well, serves for several seasons.
Choose the size of the cells 15x15 or 10x10 cm. The frame is fixed quickly. It can sag under heavy load, so it may be necessary to make several intermediate battens.
Trellis made of wooden slats
A lattice of rails is made on the frame, thick ones should not be taken 2-3 cm enough. It is better to start fastenings with vertical ones and then fasten horizontal ones to them with self-tapping screws. The result is a beautiful and durable honeycomb support.
Metal wire trellis
The durable wire construction is used in small areas and long beds. At the chosen place, you need to install vertical pillars, if the length is large, keep the span 1, 5-2 meters. Horizontal strips are fixed between them. Next, fasteners are mounted for tensioning the wire, in the form of staples from nails. Distances are made according to the selected cell volume.
The wire should be no thinner than 2 mm. For the convenience of fastening, you can cut pieces of the desired length, with a margin of 10-15 cm for screwing to brackets and overlapping for cells. Better to start with horizontal guides. Each horizontal wire should be wrapped in vertical segments. To speed up the process, you can take the fabric of the finished welded mesh from the fence, preferably galvanized.
Installing a trellis for cucumbers and tomatoes in a greenhouse
The limited space of the greenhouse obliges to create a vertical direction for each plant, here growing without trellises is unthinkable. The structure of the object itself can serve as a framework for creating a support. This reduces the installation time, facilitates work, and allows you to use different options for arranging trellises.
A popular solution is a twine support. Usually, the upper profile of the structure is used for fastening. In a wide greenhouse with three beds, a strong wire or block is pulled along the length, to which the garter will be carried out. The twine is fixed on a vertical base, and the free hanging end holds the plant - around it, as it grows, they twine the stem of the tomatoes, the cucumbers themselves rush up, being held by the antennae.
In the greenhouse, you can arrange a mesh support. Reception of stands made of plastic pipes or wooden pegs "works" well. They are buried in the ground after planting seedlings and then tied to these supports of the plant. A similar method is suitable for tomatoes, eggplant, peppers.
You can use one peg for several bushes, it must be high and stable. After installing the support, the required number of threads is fixed on the top, which are directed towards the plants. The growing plants will be pulled up along the laid twine. After harvesting, the rope is cut and removed along with the wilted tops.
