In the summer, pelargonium is not very comfortable in room conditions. The plant suffers from heat in stuffy conditions. And many flower growers move their pots to fresh air - some to the balcony, and who has the opportunity - and to their personal plot. But then autumn comes - and it's time to return the flowers to their permanent place of residence under the roof of their house. And after that, many complain that the plant that grew so well in the garden begins to shed its leaves in the room. Why is this happening and how to avoid it?
The soft return of the perennial to indoor conditions
Pelargonium is a hardy plant, but it can react under stress by shedding its leaves. Even in spite of the fact that pelargonium tolerates slight frosts, when a flower from the fresh, humid September weather gets into a completely different microclimate of our dry and warm homes, this is stress for him. And our task is to soften it as much as possible.
How to do it:
• first of all, do not delay in order to return perennials back to houses and apartments, do not expect a noticeable cold snap, let alone frost;
• you should not immediately return the pot to the windowsill in the room - let it get used to a new stop, "settle" first on the veranda or on the balcony for acclimatization.
Even if the plants have suffered from frost, they can still be restored. To do this, after returning to their former place of residence in room conditions, they will need pruning and feeding. But, of course, it is better not to bring flowers to such a state.
Why does pelargonium suffer in the apartment in the summer?
Pelargoniums in an apartment can be uncomfortable in summer, both from the heat and from improper care. If the room is hot to the pots on the window, the leaves begin to turn yellow and fall off. To facilitate this difficult period for the plant, we may not calculate watering and moisten the soil too abundantly. This also has a negative effect on the plant. And gradually the lush bush loses its leaves, more and more exposing the drying stem. Pelargonium is better to dry out a little than to fill with watering.
Therefore, if you water the flowers in the heat, and they continue to turn yellow, you should check whether stagnant water has formed in the pot and whether the roots have rotted. If so, then an urgent need to save the flower. To do this, transplant it into fresh soil.
If the roots are rotten, the diseased parts must be cut off. The transplant is recommended to be carried out in another pot, or by thoroughly disinfecting the old one.
Also, check to see if the drain holes in the bottom of the pot are clogged. More can be done if necessary. And don't forget to create a drainage layer before adding fresh potting soil to the pot.
Overfeeding with mineral fertilizers also has a detrimental effect on flowers. If this happens, the soil becomes saline and the flower loses its ability to absorb nutrients. As a result, leaves fall. To prevent this from happening, feeding is carried out no more than once every two weeks.
Protect plants from sunburn
Pelargoniums are transferred outdoors in pots or transplanted into open ground. In the fresh air, flowers are transformed instantly. But only under the condition that they do not get a sunburn. You can find out that this happened by changing the color of the sheet plate. She begins to turn brown or acquire red hues. This can happen not only in the open field, but also on the balcony.
To avoid burning the leaves, follow these rules:
• first - try to move the plant out of the room into the open sun not on the hottest day;
• and the second - in the first days for prevention, shade the plants from direct rays.
These simple rules will protect your flowers from losing leaves both in summer and in autumn, when they return to indoor conditions.
