The dates for the landing of gladioli in flower beds are approaching. What you need to know about the reproduction of these plants, what mistakes do flower growers make more often, and what are the simple ways to reproduce these bright perennial corms at home?

Reproduction of perennials by dividing corms

The planting of gladioli (or skewer) on flower beds begins in late April - early May. And by this time, you need to have time to prepare the planting material to carry out disinfection measures. For this, about a month before the scheduled date, the bulbs are examined for decay, damage. If there are doubts about the quality, the covering scales are removed in order to identify and, if possible, reanimate the nodules. Very often, planting material can be saved by treating foci of diseases with ordinary brilliant green. Small lesions are removed to healthy tissue and sprinkled with crushed charcoal.

Before planting, it is recommended to vernalize the corms so that they have green sprouts. If, at the same time, several shoots appeared on one copy, such planting material can be propagated by dividing the bulb. It is cut so that there is one sprout on each conditional half. The delenki are allowed to dry, after which the sections are disinfected and treated with crushed charcoal.

Reproduction of gladioli by planting children

Gladioli are perennial plants, but by the fourth year of life it becomes noticeable that in those varieties that only recently pleased with their decorative appearance, the buds and flowers become smaller, the petals are affected by diseases. This is because the corms age quickly. It is a mistake to believe that a good, strong plant will turn out from a large bulb with a wide bottom. It is better to plant a small, but still young planting material.

But the corms grow a large number of children - tubers, and they are also successfully used for the propagation of flowers. The peculiarity of preparing such children for planting is that they need to be cleaned of dense covering scales. Often, the gladiolus lacks the strength to break through this tough protective shell in order to germinate. But it can be difficult for an amateur florist to cope with it with his bare hands. And in order to facilitate the process, there is such a trick as soaking the planting material in warm water or immersing it in a soda solution for 15-20 minutes - then things will go more fun. For 1 liter of water take 1 teaspoon. l. soda powder.

Before planting in the garden, the children are soaked for 4-5 hours in water, to which it is also useful to add a biological fungicide. Planting material should not be drowned. Tubercuts can be wrapped in a towel, placed in a bowl and pour water on the bottom so that it moisturizes the fabric, but gladioli do not suffocate without air access.

Planting gladioli on a flower bed

Before planting, experts recommend calibrating the children and planting specimens of the same size in the same groove. In addition, it is undesirable to do mixed planting of tubers and old bulbs. The latter with a more powerful leaf apparatus will develop faster and begin to shade the beds with young sprouts.

The flowerbed for gladioli is filled with herbal humus. For planting children, neat parallel grooves are made with row spacing of about 15 cm. The holes are dug at a distance of about 5-7 cm from each other. The planting depth depends on the size of the tuber, but the same rule applies to them as for the planting of adult bulbs: they are buried 2-3 times the height of the planting material. Adult bulbs are placed no closer than 10 cm apart.

They try to plant the roots of the roots down, and the place where the sprout appears - up. On top of the planting, the children are covered with humus and moderate watering of the beds is carried out. If cold snaps strike, the wet soil will warm up for a long time, which will have a bad effect on the children. When 2-3-year-old corms are planted, watering is done more abundantly.
